Two tremendously exciting title fights will be telecast on Aksyon TV of TV5 Sports from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. today.

In the main event WBC featherweight champion Abner Mares will battle former champion Jhonny Gonzalez while in the co-main event Victor "Vikingo" Terrazas will defend his WBC super bantamweight title against Leo Santa Cruz.

Boxingscene.com reported a short while ago that Mares is looking forward to putting his unbeaten record on the line when he makes the first defense of his WBC featherweight title against Jhonny Gonzalez in Carson, California.

Mexican Mares became a three-division world champion when he stopped Daniel Ponce De Leon in the ninth round of their title fight in April. With a solitary draw blotting an otherwise perfect 27-fight pro career, Mares goes into the clash against former champion Gonzalez a heavy favorite.

However, the 27-year-old Mares has lots of respect for the challenger, who made four successful defenses of the belt before losing to Ponce De Leon.

Mares was quoted by boxingscene.com saying "I won't disappoint, I promise you a great fight like I always do.This is another tough fight, but I want to fight nothing but the best... Champion, ex-world champion, whoever you bring, whoever the fans want me to fight, you know I'll fight. I like and admire Jhonny Gonzalez.I like his style of fighting and know his camp because 'Nacho' Beristain was my trainer for three years. I know the style and it's nothing but finesse and nothing but pureness.
"I'm ready to experience coming out and putting on a real show for the fans.''

On the other hand Gonzalez (54-8), who also held the WBO bantamweight title earlier in his career, still carries a threat in both fists with 46 stoppage wins to his credit. He lost the WBO bantamweight title to two-division Filipino world champion Gerry Penalosa in a stunning 7th round knockout in August 2007.

Gonzalez said "The question I've been asked the most is if I am looking at this as my last chance at the big time. Well, I am not. One way to stop getting this question from the media is to win today."

Gonzalez said "Every fighter wants to get a shot at the world title, and then to win it, but my body feels good and I still feel I have a lot of fight left in me. I'm not looking ahead, but I can see a possible move to super featherweight in the future. "I may have more knockouts than he has fights but he had such a great amateur career than I think we are tied when it comes to experience.

Gonzalez added "I am sure the biggest winners will be the fans and the sport of boxing because this fight is going to be a total war.''
