Moving its sports programs from IBC 13 to the UHF Channel Aksyon TV, the Sports Production Group of TV 5 will telecast a blockbuster championship double-header on Sunday from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.
In the main event undefeated three-division world champion Abner Mares, regarded as a future target of Nonito ?The Filipino Flash? Donaire who is moving up to featherweight, battles former two-division world champion Jhonny Gonzales while in a super bantamweight war Victor ?Vikingo? Terrazas will clash with undefeated former IBF bantamweight champion Leo Santa Cruz.
Mares who has a record of 26-0-1 with 14 knockouts will defend his WBC featherweight title against the veteran Gonzalez (54-8, 46 KO?s) who in August 2007 lost his WBO bantamweight title in a stunning 7th round knockout to former two-division world champion Gerry Penalosa of the Philippines.
Mares said ?My preparation is done and I?m ready to perform and put on a great show. I?ve got a hard fight ahead of me. Jhonny Gonzalez is a tremendous fighter, tough, and very skilled. But I?m here to fight?
The Golden Boy Promotions fight card will be telecast on Showtime.
Gonzalez for his part said ? my fight with Mares is going to be a war. Mares built his career with hard-earned fights and he wants to defend his title. I am motivated to claim the title. At this point in my career I feel that this could be one of my last opportunities to take that title.
?I invite all fight fans to witness what will be a battle for the ages. Abner Mares is youthful and strong but I have experience and will come well prepared with my own arsenal of weapons.?
Leo Santa Cruz who is unbeaten with a record of 24-1-1 with 14 KO?s will strive to wrest the 122 pound WBC green and gold belt from Terrazas who has a record of 37-2-1 with 21 knockouts.
Santa Cruz who is one of the more exciting fighters in the Golden Boy Promotions stabvle was quoted as saying ?I think Terrazas is going to be toughest fighter I?ve fought in my career. He?s a great champion. He likes to come forward and throw a lot of punches. He?s a true Mexican warrior, very brave, but those are the kinds of fighters I like to fight.?
Terrazas, for his part said, ?I do believe I?m getting overlooked in this fight, but that doesn?t take away my desire or my will to win. Being overlooked also doesn?t give me any more motivation, but that?s only because I?m already motivated. There?s a reason why I?m champion.?
