Former PBA ?Best Import? awardee Jamelle Cornley who recently got into trouble with the law in Quezon City but is now out, played a hero?s role when he buried a game-winning basket to lead the Matina Enclaves_CMO team over the visiting Champions for Christ team at the Davao City Recreation Center.
The 6?5? Cornley reportedly scored on a spinning 10 foot fade-away shot to give the Davao squad an 89-87 victory to the delight of the hometown fans.
Edge Davao Sports in a story relayed to the Manila Standard by Jek Melendres said Cornley ?sank the game-winning shot like a cold assassin out to complete a mission? after pleading with coach Miggy Solitaria for the final play with 6 seconds left in the game in which Cornley played sluggishly through the fourth quarter.
?I have high respect and confidence in him so when he asked for the final play, I did not hesitate to map it out for him,? said the youthful bench tactician who gave the Enclaves its first victory after taking over the Royal Mandaya outfit.
It was only the second loss for the vaunted Champions for Christ since playing in a series of exhibition matches in the country. The other winner over the visitors was the Gilas national team of coach Chot Reyes now building up for the FIBA Asia Championships at the Mall of Asia beginning on August 1..
The Davao Edge reported that in n the final play, Cornley ?took the inbound pass from John Ferriols on the right quartercourt and quickly attracted the double team from Tyrone White and Tyler Brown. He spun to his left and took a fallaway jumper that sent the ball through the cords and leaving 2 seconds on the game clock. The crowd inside the Davao City Recreation Center exploded in cheers after the basket but to the surprise of many, the visiting team did not sue for time and went for a half-court heave as time expired.
Cornley finished with 16 points for the night and relished memories of his high school varsity days with the Brookhaven High School in Ohio when he also scored his only other career game-winning shot.
In an interview at the Davao Sportswriters Association forum the 26 year old Cornley said ?I took it against Sach Sullinger who is the father of NBA player Jared of the Boston Celtics.?
Cornley paid tribute to team owner Glen Escandor, team manager Bong Go, coach Miggy Solitaria and team coordinator Jek Melendres for the opportunity to showcase his talents in Davao City. Cornley had just planed in from Pennsylvania and will be in the country hoping to land another stint in the PBA where he suited up for Rain Or Shine.
