Filipino fighters Jaderes "Mayon" Padua and Weng Haya are scheduled in tough battles this Saturday night in Mexico (Sunday morning in the Philippines).

WBC Youth champion Jaderes Padua (8-2-1. 5KO's) will face none other than veteran 3-time world champion Fernando "Kochulito" Montiel (49-2-4, 37KO's) at Hotel Azul in Ixtapa, Guerrero, while in Merida, Yucat?n, Cebuano Weng Haya (17-5, 9KO's) will battle undefeated hard-hitting Miguel "Alacran" Berchelt (18-0, 15KO's); both very hard fights, but the pinoy warriors are in Mexico to battle for victory.

The 22-year-old Jaderes "Mayon" Padua, who was not yet a professional boxer when Fernando Montiel defended his world title against Z Gorres at the open-air Cebu Sports Complex in February of 2007, will have the huge opportunity to retire one of the most popular Mexican boxers of the last 10 years as Montiel, who as not looked that impressive in his latest outings, has assured that if the Filipino defeats him, he would retire.

"I'm not the same fighter I used to be. In my previous fights, I have not done well. My retirement is near and my fight against Padua will tell. If I lose, or even if I win with difficulty, it could be my goodbye," Montiel said.

In February of 2011 Montiel was knocked out in devastating fashion by Filipino former champ Nonito Donaire in the second round of their bantamweight unification battle in Las Vegas. Later that year, Montiel lost again against compatriot Victor "Vikingo" Terrazas, a fight in which the once fearsome KOchulito was sent to the canvas in round 5.

Even if the veteran Montiel is indeed in the last stretches of his stellar career, the clash will still be a very tough one for the unheralded "Mayon" Padua who in his last fight last April was knocked out in six rounds by former champion Tomas "Gusano" Rojas.

Fernando Montiel might not be in this prime, but he has experience and he can still swing very hard, while Padua has shown in his last combat that he could not take hard blows, being knocked out by Rojas, a veteran fighter not recognized has a hard puncher.

Will the 11-fights still rookie "Mayon" Padua, fighting in enemy territory against a 3-time world champion, manage to turn the tide and emerge victorious against all odds... or will the hard-swinging 34-year-old Fernando "Kochulito" Montiel from Los Mochis eat alive the hopeful kid from Albay Province?

Jaderes "Mayon" Padua is managed by Filipino promoter Gabriel "Bebot" Elorde Jr. of Elorde International Productions.

The Fernando Montiel-Jaderes "Mayon" Padua 12-rounder for the vacant WBC International Super Bantamweight (122 lbs) Title at Ixtapa Zihuatanejo, Estado de Guerrero, is a production of Promociones del Pueblo, Kochul Montiel Producciones, Cerveza Corona and will be broadcast on Televisa Deportes Canal 5 in "Sabados de Corona."

Belchert and Haya.

WENG HAYA FIGHTS MIGUEL BELCHERT IN MERIDA

The same night, but at El Complejo Deportivo Inal?mbrica in Merida, Yucat?n, Mandaue fighter 24-year-old Weng Haya squares off unbeaten local smacker Miguel "Alacran" Belchert in a 10-rounder non-title clash in the super featherweight division.

Belchert comes from scoring a round 1 demolition over unheralded Puerto Rican Carlos Claudio (16-10-3, 9KO's) in one of the preliminaries of the Brandon "BamBam" Rios against Mike Alvarado (a fight won by Alvarado) last March at the Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas.

Meanwhile, the 24-year-old Weng Haya, in his second fight in the land of Salvador Sanchez, sees action for the first time since September of last year when he knocked out huge underdog Cris Alag in Misamis Occidental.

In his first outing in Mexico in December of 2011, Weng Haya was split seconds away from pulling one of the biggest upsets in recent boxing history when the Mandaue kid threw the hard blows that sent then reigning featherweight world champion Orlando "Siri" Salido spiraling to he canvas.

It was an unbelievable moment for the Filipino. Weng Haya had bombarded Salido and sent him crashing to the floor in round 3 and then again in round 4.

The thrilling action was unfolding at the home town of Salido in Ciudad Obregon, Sonora. Unfortunately, Haya could not finish the job. The ever tough Salido regrouped and knocked out Weng Haya in round 8.

The above results proved again that in boxing most amazing things could happen. So will Weng Haya have better luck in Mexico this time... or will he be another scalp in the ascending career of the 21-year-old heavy-puncher Mexican Miguel Belchert?

Weng Haya is assisted in Mexico by the international man of boxing Mr. Sammy G. Gello-Ani, owner of the successful SGG Promotions.

The experienced Gello-Ani of Iloilo, now living in Cebu, is also the promoter of Filipino world champion Jhonriel Casimero (18-2, 10KO's). Last March, Gello-Ani led Casimero to a rewarding victory in Panama.

The Miguel Belchert-Weng Haya non-title rumble is a presentation of Promociones Zanfer in association with Max Boxing and will broadcast live on "Box Azteca" at 22:30 horas (Mexico Time) on TV Azteca Canal 7.
