CEBU CITY (May 26) PNA -- Jason "El Nino" Pagara retained his World Boxing Organization (WBO) International light welterweight title while Jimrex ?Executiner? Jaca became the new WBO Oriental light welterweight king after beating their respective Mexican rivals in the Pinoy Pride XX last Saturday night at the Waterfront Cebu City Hotel and Casino here.
Pagara scored a second round knockdown and landed more telling blows to score a convincing unanimous decision against Mexican challenger Aaron "Jewel" Herrera in the main event.
Pagara opened a cut on Herrera?s right eye in the 6th despite the constant straight jabs of the Mexican. Herrera caught Pagara with his own combination in the 9th round. But Pagara came back strong with his hooks and body shots in the final three rounds to score his second successful title-defence and improved his ring record to 31 wins with 19 KOs and 2 loses. Herrera suffered his second defeat against 25 wins and 17 KOs.
Jaca, on the other hand, survived a late knockdown in the final round to escape also with a unanimous decision against Mexican veteran Jose Emilio Perea.
Jaca, who kept on hitting Perea with his powerful punches, suffered a two-inch cut below his eye due to an accidental headbutt in the second round.
Despite absorbing combinations from Jaca, Perea continued to chase the Filipino fighter until the end of the 12-round fight.
Perea even caught Jaca with a lucky punch in the last two seconds of the final round for a knockdown. Jaca, however, was saved already by the bell.
WBO representative for Asia Leon Panoncillo awarded the belts together with ALA Promotions president Michael Aldeguer and vice-president Dennis Canete.
Jaca, 29, now has a record of 37 wins, 21 KOs, 6 loses and 3 draws while Perea, 30, absorbed his third loss against 29 wins with 20 KOs.
In the undercard, reigning World Boxing Council (WBC) and World Boxing Organization (WBO) Asia Pacific super bantamweight champion Genesis ?Azukal? Servania remained undefeated by stopping Indonesian Isack Junior in the third round of their non-title fight.
Servania landed left-right combinations mostly body shots to knockdown Junior in 2;15 of the third canto. Isack, who failed to land any single clear punch against Servania told the referee that he could no longer continue after helplessly sitting near the ropes.
Meanwhile, 17-year old Jessel Magsayo, a native of Tagbilaran City and also of ALA Boxing Stable made an impressive pro debut by stopping Melton Sandal, 19, of Zamboanga del Norte in 2:09 of the first round.
The other results of the undercard: Ralph Lulu beat Junnie Salogaol by unanimous decision (8 rds.-118 lbs.); Roland Servania won against Andrew Palas (4 rds.-114 lbs.) by UD; Elmo Traya stopped Jonie Villacrusis (4 rds.-130 lbs.) in the first round by technical knockout; Richard Barrios TKO?d Lauro Balweg in the first round (4 rds.-105 lbs.); Jonas Sultan TKO?d Kazuma Ejiri in first round (4 rds.-115 lbs.).
