A STRONGER POLICY FOR RP BOXING

Last Thurssday November 30,2006 , (not a holiday per Presidential Executive Order ) , the honorable members of this GAB Board had its official meeting presided by Chairman Eric R.Buhain purposely with the main agenda of tackling controversial issues involving professional boxing, particularly some messy matters in the industry.

Little did the public know that inspite the accolade and all these glorious victories given by our topnotch world class boxers in honor of this "strong Republic" , there are some relevant points that must be addressed by this Board. In short we cannot allow that other unscrupulous individuals may take advantage of the situation at the expense of this Board's image and as an agency delegated by the President of the Philippines to Her Excellency's watchdog in the conduct of regulation and supervision over all professional sports in the country.

Chairman Eric R.Buhain who just arrived from Las Vegas , Nevada , USA who joined the Philippines' diplomatic entourage in giving the expected "moral support" for our "golden boy" the great Manny Pacquiao , and he issued this strongly worded statement to wit " with Manny's victory in the grand finale over El Terrible Morales of Tijuan , Mexico , we must be firm in our dealings practically to all concerned in the entire boxing community of the country to better enhance this sport and to protect the world calss Filipino boxers".In addition to this he stated further that "no one will ever make a mistake to make use or take any advantage or an iota of misdeed to trample upon our strong policies in the GAB , much more in professional boxing".Buhain is much serious this time to professionalize the trend of this leading sport which is now becoming more and more lucrative industry in the global scene. Meaning, since we feel that others are trying to make boxing as their way of business rather than a professional sport , "may paglalagyan sila kay Buhain dito". Take for instance that promoter who paid fake money to boxing officials in a recent card in Mindanao.

This writer is pretty sure that maybe the good GAB big boss has been affected and got irritated with all these messy-massy things happening around some few boxers and their managers. The cases pending before our legal department now which have had something to do with "sulutan" portions between and by the pugs and their handlers themselves. The latest of which was the Jimrex Jaca leaving for the United States without the knowledge of his manager Wakee Salud .Jaca allegedly signed fight contracts with the De La Hoya's Golden Boy Promotions though not through Wakee but having been engineered nor architected by other groups and now under GAB's investigations.Jaca unfortunately lost via a KO in the 9th round in his recent encounter with Juan manuel Marquez of Mexico over the weekend.

The GAB chair will seek the unanimous approval of this Board to impose an all out clean up policy. One of them is to require everybody without exemptions to bring their boxers here in the GAB main office at Makati for the weighing-in regardless of your place of origins in the country. The seven (7) days rule prior to the boxer's fight and their traveling documentations to be scrutinized to the fullest without fear or favor to anyone. We mean business not only this time but all the time! This is for the greater interest and common protection for all the who are legally and legitimately engaged in professional boxing.

We are only after the welfare of everybody in the professional sports arena.Gone are those years of "palakasan" and "padreno" system.Buhain and his Board are really determined to institute more changes in our policies in subscription to the national professional sporting agenda attuned towards a stronger Republic.
