YOUNG chess wizards battle it out for top honors when the 2013 National age-group chess championship kicks off in Cadiz City, Negros Occidental recently.
Woodpushers from Cadiz city and various places like Silay City, Bacolod City, Guimaras, Bago city, Agusan del Sur, Bohol and Cebu city joined the event for a chance to crown champion in six different categories.
The hosting of Cadiz city is a last-minute effort made by National Chess Federation of the Philippines (NCFP) Committee chairman on Grassroots development and promotions Neri Javier Colmenares to push through with the competition. Roxas city supposedly would host the event but the place was flooded due to typhoon Quinta.
NCFP Chairman and President, Prospero "Butch" Pichay Jr. is grateful that the city government of Cadiz headed by Mayor Patrick Escalante has accepted the invitation to host the chess championship. This nationwide competition is thru the initiative of Congressman Colmenares of Bayan Muna Party list.
Sen. Aquilino ?Koko? Pimentel sponsored the Visayas leg elimination by providing the cost of the event including awards and prizes. Senator Pimentel happens to be a true-blooded chess player. He played chess actively during late 80?s and early 90?s in his younger days and even joined in the national and international competition including the prestigious UAAP tournament.
Meanwhile, most players from host Cadiz and Cebu city shine in the first round of chess action.
In boys Under-16, Robert Ace Cabras, John Vincent Mirabe, Edgar Escobia, Genesis Descalsota and Under-10 campaigner Carl Anthony Procalla all from Cadiz city defeated their respective opponents to advance in the next round with one point each.
In the Girls U-10 and U-8 division, Cebu city dominated the event with wins by Alphecca Gonzales, Methusellah Huban and Jasia Dorog also with one point apiece.
Other first round winners include: Christy Cabungcag (Escalante city), Fiona Geeweneth Guierhem (Iloilo city), Mark Adrian Ong (Sipalay city), Adrian de Luna (Guimaras province) and Stevenson Garong of Bacolod city. The game between Sara Francine Olendo vs. Natorri Biazza Diaz ended in draw. -Marlon Bernardino-
