
PHILIPPINE MEMORY TEAM FINISHES THIRD AT WORLD 'OLYMPIC' MEMORY GAMES

London, United Kingdom -- THE Philippine Memory Team completed a successful campaign at the conclusion of 21st World 'Olympic' Memory Championship (WMC) here at the Lilian Baylis Technology School on Sunday (December 16, 2012).
The Philippine Memory Team was composed of 11 year-old whiz kid Jamyla Domingo Lambunao, Roberto Racasa, Christopher Carandang, Mark Anthony Castaneda, Erwin Balines, Axelyancy Cowan Tabernilla, Ian Roi Spencer Betiong, Cristine Barao, Anne Bernadette Bonita, Princess Grace Mendoza, Blessie Mae Ayalde, deputy chief of mission and team captain Almario Marlon Bernardino Jr. finished with a bronze medal in the team competition.
?This is our early Christmas gift to the Filipino people worldwide. We hope this victory will unite all the Filipino and support the memory games,? said deputy chief of mission and team captain Almario Marlon Bernardino Jr., a United States and Filipino Chess Master.
?This proves once again that the Filipino can be at par with the world?s best memory athletes. We believe that the memory game is what the Filipino needs to have a better quality of education. And finally we are very optimistic that memory games will bring honor again to our countries in future International competition,? added Racasa, a former PUP top chess player who got his first grandmaster norm here in London WMC meet after memorizing a ten (10) deck of cards in an hour.
Powerhouse Germany took home the gold medal while Sweden captured the silver medal.
The country rankings at the end of the championships are as follows: 1. Germany; 2 Sweden; 3 Philippines; 4 India; 5 U.S.A; 6 China. Other countries are United Kingdom, Hong Kong, Poland, Norway, Indonesia, Malaysia, Japan, Finland, Denmark, Singapore, Turkey, Australia, France, Netherlands, Wales, and Ireland.
Some of the stand-out results included:
? 11-year-old whiz kid Jamyla Domingo Lambunao of Marikina City topped the Hour Cards and Spoken Numbers event, settling second in the 30 minutes binary numbers, five minute speed numbers and 15 minute random words and landed at third place in the 15 minute names and faces and 5 minute historic dates category for two gold, three silver and two bronze in the Kids Category, 12 and under event.
? Mark Anthony Castaneda from Mandaluyong became first Filipino double Grandmaster of Memory. The 24-year-old Rizal Technological University Mandaluyong BS ECE graduate student memorized a 193 Numbers in perfectly arranged to topped the Spoken Numbers event.
-Erwin Balines also from Mandaluyong City won his third and final GM norms. The 24-year-old PUP-Manila BS ECE graduate student memorized a sixteen (16) deck of cards in an hour en route to his third grandmaster (GM) norm. Balines is the second Filipino Grandmaster of Memory after Castaneda got the grandmaster (GM) title of Memory in last year's WMC Guangzhou, China meet.
-Roberto Racasa of Marikina City got his first Grandmaster Norm after memorizing ten (10) deck of cards in Hour Cards.
-Christopher Carandang, a native of Lipa City, Batangas and currently based in Cabuyao, Laguna got his first Grandmaster Norm after memorizing 1,000 digit numbers in an hour.
Roger Padilla Ferreol, president of Mitcham Filipino British Association (MFBA) here in London personally witnessed the three-day mind boggling competition said 'Binabati natin ang lahat ng mga miyembro ng Philippine Memory Team na muling nagbigay ng karangalan sa ating bayan. Sana po ay suportahan natin ang memory games partikular na ang ating gobyerno sa Pilipinas'.
Ven Bermudez of Kusinang Munti and Pinoy Radio UK said in a recent interview ' Dapat natin suportahan ang memory games kasi malaki ang maitutulong nito sa ating komunidad hindi lamang sports ang memory games.
New Filipino Arbiters
After three day of competition (December 14, 15 and 16, 2012), a nine (9) Filipino New Arbiters of the World Memory Sports Council. This are Fernando Betiong, Maximo Nicanor Sosmena, Karlo Marco Galvan, Ronnie Gonzales, Carol Barbra Cruz, Lovely Icao, Elenita Mendoza, Josephine Ayalde and Almario Marlon Bernardino Jr.
More Countries are eyeing for next year's hosting of WMC
A lot of countries signified their intention to host the 2013 World 'Olympic' Memory Championship that includes Philippines, Russia, Lithuania, Japan, China, Mexico among others.
No less than World Memory Sports Council co-founders famous book author Tony Buzan and chess grandmaster OBE Raymond Keene led the closing rites that includes Chris Day, Phil Chambers, and Jennifer Goddard among other officials.
Overall, the 2012 World 'Olympic' Memory individual champion is Johannes Mallows of Germany.
