Top Rank Promotions held the official weigh-in Friday afternoon for the fighters featured for tomorrow night’s fight card at the famed Pechanga Casino at Temecula, California in San Diego County, California.
Headlining the fight card is a junior lightweight title fight for the WBO Belt. The said belt is presently held by Emmanuel Navarette (39-2-1, 32KO) of San Juan Zitlaltepec, Mexico. Navarrete is being challenged by an undefeated Filipino gladiator, Charly Suarez (18-0-0,10K) of San Isidro, Davao del Norte.
Suarez stepped on the scale and had no problem hitting the weight at 129.9. Navarrete however was a tad over (130.4) when he hit the scales. He stripped to his birthday suit but still came in at 130.3. He was given 2 hours to lose the excess weight by the California Boxing Commission. He made it on the third time. Had he not made the weight, the fight would still go as scheduled but Navarrete will not keep the belt even if he beat Suarez. In addition, there will be monetary penalties as well.
From the point of view of this writer, Navarrete looks drained trying to make the 130lbs contract weigh limit. This was not overlooked by Team Suarez but they are not getting over-confident and will still approach the fight as though Navarrete hit the limits the first try at the scale.
In the supporting main event, a fight for the vacant interim IBF lightweight belt, both contenders, Raymund Muratalla (22-0-0-17KO) of West Covina, California and his opponent, Zaur Abdullaev (20-1-0, 12KO) of Dydymkin, Russia made the weight on their first try at 134.4
