Despite losing by points to world-rated Mexican Carlos "Principe" Cuadras, the brave Filipino Fernando "Trigger" Lumacad did impressively well Saturday night at the plush Foro Polanco in Ciudad de Mexico. Lumacad even visited the canvas twice during the intense 12-round action-packed WBC silver title clash, nonetheless the tough Gensan fighter hung in there, displaying heart and warrior spirit, earning thunderous applause from the crowd.
Reporter/international matchmaker Kazuto Harada of Bangkok Gurentai's gives his fight account:
"Great fight! Lumacad went down in rounds 3 and 4 the result of brutal body combinations dished out by the Mexican Cuadras. But in a later round, wide and strong hooks thrown by the Filipino impacted Cuadras's head and body. Those hard blows made Cuadras loss stamina rapidly.
"Parts of Cuadras's face suffered cuts due to Lumacad's punches and the Mexican got a bloody nose. Lumacad fought Cuadras bravely! However, the Pinoy scored a bit less number of punches than the Mexican. Perhaps, a sinus congestion on Lumacad due to the different weather in Mexico city made the Filipino lose stamina during the hard fought match," commented Bangkok Gurentai.
The fight was the second great presentation of the "Trigger" Fernando Lumacad this year in Mexico. Last July Lumacad went toe-to-toe with slugger former champion Hernan "Tyson" Marquez, losing a close majority decision that one of the Mexican judges saw it draw.
After the brave crowd-pleasing performances, no surprise if next year Fernando Lumacad is invited to fight in the land of Salvador Sanchez again.
