
REYES, ORCOLLO, PAGULAYAN, PARICA, ALCANO CONTINUE WINNING WAYS IN US OPEN 9-BALL

HALL of famer Efren "Bata" Reyes and Dennis "Robocop" Orcollo continue to sizzle in the 37th Annual U.S.Open 9-Ball Championship on Thursday (Friday in Manila Time) at the Holiday Inn Virginia Beach - Norfolk Convention Center in Virginia, USA.
The 58-year-old Reyes, top player of Puyat Sports, toppled Darren Appleton of Great Britain, 11-10, and Wang Can of China, 11-7, respectively to stay in the winner?s bracket. The 34-year-old Orcollo, top player of Bugsy Promotions, meantime defeated Mike Davis of the USA,11-5, and Niels Feijen of the Netherlands, 11-8, in order. Thus, Reyes and Orcollo will meet each other in the sixth round of winner's brackets on Friday (Saturday in Manila Time).
"Magandang bakbakan ang pagtatapat nina Efren (Reyes) at Dennis (Orcollo). Isa't-isa ang labanan kung sino ang buwenas ay y'un ang mananalo kasi 9-ball ang event. Kaso malungkot lamang tayo kasi aasahan na naman nating isang Filipino ang malalagay sa loser's brackets," said Orcollo's long-time manager Ceferino "Perry" Mariano, top honcho of Bugsy Promotions.
"Panalangin lamang natin na Filipino ang mag-uwi ng US Open 9-ball crown," added Philippine Billiards God Father Aristeo "Putch" Puyat, long-time supporter of Reyes.
Three other crack Filipino player, Alex "The Lion" Pagulayan,Jose "Amang" Parica and Ronato "Volcano" Alcano, also continued their winning ways in the $170,000 tournament which offers $25,000 to the champion.
The 36-year-old Pagulayan, another prize fighter of Puyat Sports, dismantled Daryl Peach of Great Britain,11-10, and Chang Jung-lin of Chinese-Taipei, 11-6, to face Johnny "The Scorpion" Archer of the USA in the following round. Archer outclassed Brandon Shuff of the USA, 11-2, and Albin Ouschan of Austria, 11-3.
The 63-year-old Parica, dubbed as the leader of the Filipino invasion in the US pool circuit in the mid 80's, waylaid Raj Hundal of India, 11-10, and Earl "The Pearl" Strickland of the USA, 11-5. He will square off with Jayson Shaw of the USA, who brought downed Jason Klatt of Canada, 11-7, and Corey Deuel of the USA, 11-8.
The 40-year-old Alcano, meanwhile smashed Mika Immonen of Finland, 11-4, and Li He-wen of China, 11-4, to slug it out against Shane Van Boening of the USA, who outpointed Nick Van Den Berg of the Netherlands, 11-4, and Chris Melling of Great Britain, 11-4.
In the loser's brackets, Warren "Warrior"Kiamco and Carlo "The Black Tiger" Biado lost in a tightly-fought encounter. Kiamco bowed to David Alcaide of Spain, 11-6, while Biado was yielded to Jin Hu Dang of China, 11-7, to join other compatriots Filipino in the exit door that includes Francisco "Django" Bustamante, Santos "The Saint" Sambajon, Ramon "Maestro Monching" Mistica, Israel "Amay" Rota, Daniel Dagotdot and Reynaldo Campana.
The Filipino US Open 9-Ball Campaign is supported by Billiards Managers and Players Association of the Philippines (BMPAP), Puyat Sports, Bugsy Promotions, Negros Billiards Stable, Hermes Sports Bar and Malungai Life Oil.
