Double success for world rated Filipinos Handig (left) and Gabutan last night in La Trinidad. First, after twelve exciting rounds, 23-year-old world rated Mateo Handig Singwancha, aka "The Warai Warrior," scored a razor thin split decision over the experienced Japanese 2-time world champion Katsunari Takayama (24-6, 10KO's), to capture the vacant IBF Pan-Pacific minimumweight title last night on the campus of Benguet State University (BTU) in La Trinidad, Benguet Province in the Philippines.
With the significant win, Mateo Handig - rated minimumweight #11 by the IBF - positions himself as a likely next title challenger for IBF world champion Mario "Dragoncito" Rodr?guez (15-6-4, 11KO's) of Sinaloa, M?xico.
The co-main event saw another Pinoy triumph as 24-year-old Dayer Gabutan Singwancha (19-1-2, 8KO's), quickly demolished and knocked out hard-hitting Indonesian Lande Olin (11-4, 7KO's) to successfully defend for a sixth time his WBO Oriental Bantamweight Title.
The Ilocos Sur native Dayer Gabutan - ranked #4 by the WBO - ended the Indonesian's aspirations via technical knockout in round 2.
Dayer's victory will likely improve his standing in the WBO bantamweight world ranking as the division's champion will be decided this Saturday (Oct 20) between Dayer's fellow Filipino AJ "Bazooka" Banal and Thailand's Pungluang Sorsingyu in a much awaited 12-rounder clash at the SM Mall of Asia in Manila, Philippines.
Dayer Gabutan could be a challenger for the winner.
The successful card in La Trinidad, Benguet Province was a production of WBC Asian Promoter of the Year Brico Santig of Highland Promotions in association with Thailand Boxing patron Naris Singwancha with the support of La Trinidad Mayor Gregorio T. Abalos Jr.
