Filipino world champion Johnriel Casimero and team arrived in M?xico yesterday ahead of Casimero's IBF jr flyweight title defense against undefeated Mexican puncher Pedro "Pedr?n" Guevara this Saturday night (Sunday morning Philippine Time) at the Centro de Convenciones in "The Pearl of the Pacific," Mazatl?n, Sinaloa.
Talking to the local press who waited for him at Mazatl?n International Airport, a relaxed and smiling Casimero admitted that his challenger Pedro "Pedr?n" Guevara possess skills and described him as brave, strong and fast boxer.
However, the Pinoy said that he does not worry as he is mentally and physically well prepared to achieve victory.
A triumph of the Filipino would make him keep the IBF world title he won in spectacular fashion by knocking out Argentina's Luis "Mosquito" Lazarte.
"I know that I will face a tough and fast challenger," Casimero said, noting that the unbeaten Mexican Guevara is a brave fighter whom he expects to submit with a constant accurate punching and effective lateral movements.
Asked if Guevara's condition of being the local fighter worries him, "The Pride of Ormoc," replied that such advantage does not worry him at all.
Pedr?n Guevera was born and lives with his family in Mazatl?n.
"Inside the ropes there will be only Guevara and me. Public support is important, but not decisive."
When questioned about the aggression that he and his team were subject to after he knocked out "El Mosquito" Lazarte in Argentina, Casimero said that he is sure Mexican fans are very different.
"Mexicans know how to respect an athlete."
Two years ago, Casimero fought in Los Mochis, M?xico, losing his interim light flyweight title to "El Principe" Ram?n Garc?a-Hirales. Then, in his next fight Casimero was knocked out in five rounds by Moruti Mthalane.
Moruti Mthalane will defend his IBF flywight title against mandatory challenger Panamanian Ricardo "El Matem?tico" Nu?ez on September 1st at the Roberto Dur?n Arena in Ciudad de Panam?.
The Casimero-Guevara fight card was being named "Furia in Mazatl?n" (Rage in Mazatl?n) and will be broacast live in M?xico by TELEVISA on "S?bados de Corona."
