Top Filipino boxing official Rey Danseco has been appointed by the World Boxing Council as a ringside judge in the high-profile WBC middleweight world title fight between the popular undefeated Mexican "The Son of the Legend" Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. (45-0-1, 31 KOs), and Ireland's Andy Lee (28-1, 20 KO's) this Saturday (Sunday morning Manila Time) at the Sun Bowl in El Paso, Texas.

It will be the only second time in history that a Filipino official works in a world boxing title fight in the United States.

"After Carlos Padilla, I am the second Filipino to work as judge in a boxing fight in US soil. It's an honor for my family and my fellow Filipinos," said Danseco from California where he was scheduled to take flight to El Paso later today.

But Danseco is no stranger to act as judge in important boxing world title contests. The native of Quezon Province has regularly officiated in world title fights in Japan, Thailand, the Philippines, Canada and he became the first Filipino to judge in Mexico, earning the distinction as the "Best Philippine Boxing Judge" for two successive years.

It was in Montreal, Canada where Rey Danseco worked his most important assignment: judge in the historic win of Bernard "The Executioner" Hopkins over Jean Pascal in May 2011. Hopkins claimed the WBC light heavyweight title becoming at 46 year of age the eldest man in boxing history to win a world title fight.

"Padilla was an official in the Sugar Ray Leonard vs Roberto Duran in June 1980, which was won by 'Hands of Stone' Roberto Duran. So, I was the second Pinoy in history to work as official in Canada. Hopkins claimed the WBC light heavyweight title in Montreal. The verdict was a unanimous decision for 'The Executioner.' The two camps liked our decision as well as the public," commented Danseco to PhilBoxing.

Indeed, the WBC Hopkins-Pascal fight supervisor Mauricio Sulaiman commended Danseco's performance as "the most perfect score" when the Pinoy tallied 116-112 in favor of Hopkins.

This Saturday's Middleweight world title fight of Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. vs Irish Andy Lee will be another opportunity for Rey Danseco to showcase his skills as a top boxing judge in the world stage.

The important appointment is also seen as a recognition to the professionalism and fairness of Filipino boxing judges.

This writer met judge Rey Danseco at the Korakuen Hall in Tokyo, Japan last March as the Filipino was one of the judges in the WBC super flyweight title fight between then champion Suriyan Sor Rungvisai and Japanese challenger Yota Sato, a fight won by the 28-year-old Yota Sato by unanimous decision.

Sato will put his title on the line against WBC silver super flyweight king Silvester Lopez of the Philippines in Yokohama on July 8. Lopez is handled by top promoter Gabriel "Bebot" Elorde.

The Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. vs Andy Lee in El Paso is promoted by Top Rank, in association with Zanfer Promotions, DiBella Entertainment, AT&T and Tecate, and will be televised live on HBO World Championship Boxing?.
