In the next hour or so, unheralded Rexon Flores of the Philippines will try to accomplish what his more illustrious compatriots failed to accomplish so far this year -- win a world boxing title. Flores will challenge defending WBO Flyweight Champion Omar Andres Narvaez of Argentina at Narvaez's hometown in C?rdoba, Argentina's second largest city popularly known as "La Docta."
A string of world title fights this year by Filipino pugilists failed to bring home a single championship belt for the Philippines: Gabi (March), Mayol (May), Suico and Rubillar (July) fell one by one. Additionally, Yukka Gejon also lost a title fight in Japan in September last year.
Rexon Flores, left, of the Philippines, and Omar Narvaez of Argentina, face off after their weigh-in in Cordoba, Argentina, Friday, Aug. 4, 2006. Flores will face world champion Omar Narvaez on Saturday, in a WBO flyweight title. (AP)
Flores, 16-2-4 (9 KOs), managed by Bebot Elorde, the son of lengendary Filipino boxer Flash Elorde, will have a tall order of snatching the title for the Philippines as he will be fighting a grizzled veteran in the 31-year-old Narvaez, 21-0-2 (15 KOs), who fights by pressuring his opponent all night, more so because Narvaez will be fighting in his hometown where he fought many of his memorable fights.
But this is boxing, and as they say, anything could happen in the squared arena. So Filipino boxing fans will have their fingers crossed on this one and hope Rexon Flores will pull this one up.
The fight will be telecast on TyC Sports in South America and some places in the US.
