Mancio KOs Cabilla To Retain RP Title; Loberanis defeats Jason Canoy (Fight Report + MORE PHOTOS)

MANDAUE CITY, Cebu - In an interesting card at an open air ring set by ALA Boxing Promotions outside Mandaue Plaza Square in Cebu, Filipino light flyweight GAB champion Jerson "Smooth Operator" Mancio (15-3-3, 6KOs) of Agusan del Sur successfully defended for the first time his 108 lbs national title by scoring a fifth round technical KO over brave challenger Charlie "Steel Bar" Cabilla (12-10-4, 2KOs) of Bukidnon.
From the beginning it was an entertaining combat with both warriors exchanging explosive combinations that thrilled fans in the warm Cebu summer night. As result of the crossfire, Cabilla was thrown to the canvas in the very first stanza, but stood up firing high caliber punches that staggered his tormentor till the bell rang. However, during the second and third chapters it was a much recuperated Cabilla the warrior winning the rounds.
But Jerson Mancio, an ALA fighter, came with tough attacks, while Cabilla try to counter as the fight went on at a furious competitive pace till a huge effective blow thrown by Mancio to Cabilla's the mid-section sent the Bukidnon kid to the canvas to receive the full count of veteran referee Tony Pesons.
Cabilla stayed on the canvas in obvious pain for a couple minutes while being assisted by the paramedics present at ringside. It was a huge setback for Cabilla, while for Mancio, the triumph gets him back into the winning column after having lost his last two combats in Japan.
LOBERANIS DECISIONS JASON CANOY
In a very competitive co-main event, 21-year-old Cebuano flyweight Welbeth Loberanis (11-1, 3KOs) of Mandaue scored a close but well-deserved 10-round majority decision win over fellow Cebuano hard-hitting Jason "Dodong" Canoy (14-3-1, 9KOs) of Mabolo. Official scores in favor of Loberanis were 96-95, 96-94 and 95-95.

This author's non-official final score was 95-95 while Filipino former fighter and trainer Brix Flores non-official score card was 96-95 in favor of Loberanis.
The taller Welbeth Loberanis won the first round with good moves, skills and speed as Canoy seemed disoriented by the good counters and effective jab and boxing school being displayed by the smart Loberanis.
However, Canoy was the more aggressive and hard-puncher fighter throughout the combat, always going forward while pressing the action to become a close quarters war where he could dish out good uppercuts and power hooks.
Canoy might have won both the second and third rounds, but Loberanis came back in the fourth with steady good speed, a good jab and firing punches in higher volume.
The fifth round was the closest of the whole fight which could have gone either way as both young warriors relentlessly traded fire around the ring while fans did not cease to encouraged their favorite who seemed to be Loberanis, and the entertaining rumble went on at fast pace.
Trainer Brix Flores, who will have a free general admission fight card next Saturday (May 26) at the Mandaue Sports Complex, commented that the fifth round should have been awarded to the skillful Loberanis.
Then, it was again Loberanis who took home the sixth and seven rounds as the 22-year-old Canoy momentarily slowed down his pace during those crucial rounds, but again Canoy came back strong in the eight and nine rounds.
Both promising cebuano fighters wanted the victory so bad which might explain the alternative dominance throughout the ten rounds as the last chapter must have been for Loberanis who seemed to have a bit more gas in his tank during the final moments of battle before sound of the final bell.
A good victory for Loberanis.
PAYPA DEFEATS VILLACAMPA, AROA DESTROYS GARCIANO
In the less entertaining bout of the evening, ALA fighter 19-year-old super bantamweight Jimmy Paypa (8-2, 1KO) of Lanao del Norte, sometimes fighting as southpaw, another times as orthodox, defeated cebuano Albert "Tyson" Villacampa (7-5-2, 1KO) of Bantay Island.
Paypa was the fastest, more accurate and effective fighter. There were no knockdowns as it was clear than none of the boxers had much explosiveness in their fists. Scores were 79-73 (twice) and 80-72.

Also, promising undefeated super bantamweight southpaw Zaldy Aroa (9-0-1, 2KO's), who also hails from the paradisaical Bantayan Island located just west off the northern tip of Cebu Province, prescribed a second round technical KO over Gensan native Gilbert Garciano (1-1-2, 0KO's).
Aroa display good skills, combinations and a very accurate uppercut, a weapon that fast debilitated Garciano and took him to his demise at 1:42 seconds of the second round.
BALABA AND PARO SAVAGED OPPONENTS IN MISMATCHES
In an mismatch, the more experienced bantamweight fighter Pedro Balaba (7-3, 2KO's) of Tagbilaran City, Bohol, destroyed rookie debutant Gensan's Julie Agrabio (0-1, 0KO's) at the 2:14 mark of the first round. Experienced top referee Tony Pesons might have allowed some unnecessarily blows to rock Agrabio's head as the debutant was already signalling surrender.
The first combat of the evening, which was another mismatch, the 28-fights veteran cebuano flyweight Sherwin "Super Assassin" Paro (18-8-1, 9KOs) easily destroyed the much less experienced Ricky Nu?ez (1-4-1, 0KO's). Time of stoppage was 2:07 of the first round.
The card was supervised by Rolando Mendoza. Ring physicians Dr. Rene Bonsubre and Dr. Jose Unabia, Ring announcer John Mugat.

Also in attendance were trainers Brix Flores, Juanito Ablaca and Edito Villamor.
The fight was organized and promoted by ALA Boxing Promotions in association with Cobra Energy Drink and the cooperation of the Mandaue City government and the Mandaue City Sports Commission.
