If you google the name Juan de la Cruz, Pedro Garcia and Jose Santos, more than 100 results per name will appear. This happens every day in Latin countries and in countries colonized by Spain or Portugal just like our own.
Pinoy Pride XII today will feature Boom-Boom Bautista versus Mexico?s Genaro Garcia. ALA Promotions wanted to give Bautista a tougher test as he steps closer to a world title by having him fight Genaro Garcia who conquered Rafael Marquez in two rounds back in the year 2000 and who has fought eight world title bouts against the likes of Wilfredo Vasquez Jr. and Toshiaki Nishioka.
But Lo and Behold! Mexican Matchmaker Hugo Correa sent the wrong Genaro Garcia to the Philippines. The suspicion was triggered during the weigh-in when Cebu Press Members asked the Mexican fighter who gave him the toughest fight in his career and he answered ?Hector Velasquez?. Velasquez who was a Pacquiao victim was not in the resume of the Genaro Garcia whom ALA negotiated for. Doing their task, the Cebu Press guys researched every possible information and detail about the identity of the Mexican guest and found inconsistencies in the boxrec data of Genaro Garcia and the papers presented by Genaro Garcia Gutierrez who arrived in Cebu.
To finally answer all doubts, ALA organized a late night meeting with Genaro Garcia Gutierrez, the media people present and International Referee Bruce McTavish who had personal knowledge on identity of the former world title contender Genaro Garcia whom he refereed versus Toshiaki Nishioka. McTavish immediately shook his head upon seeing the Mexican boxer. They indeed sent the wrong person.
ALA on its part negotiated in good faith with Mexican Matchmaker Hugo Correa and clearly stated in their correspondence that they wanted the Genaro Garcia who has fought for eight world title matches. The Mexican boxer also came to the Philippines in good faith and with all the necessary government issued permits and papers which allowed him to fight and certifying that he is a professional boxer and is fit to fight abroad. When he saw the picture printed on the banners, he honestly said ?Que no soy yo? (that?s not me). Hence, Boom-Boom will be facing a natural lightweight instead of a featherweight opponent.
The eyes are now on Hugo Correa with whom ALA Negotiated. As of this time Correa cannot be contacted through phone. What can ALA Promotions do when they found out about the problem only when the foreign opponent has already arrived here, paid all the expenses for the boxer and has committed to showcase the fight on the announced date? They will definitely sue Hugo Correa. But given that Genaro Garcia Gutierrez is cleared to fight, then the show must go on!
