
PHILIPPINE MEMORY ATHLETES FETED AT MANDALUYONG CITY HALL

SIX of the nine members of the Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office-Mandaluyong-Bagong Henerasyon Philippine Memory Team were honored today (January 16, 2012) at the Regular Monday Program in Mandaluyong City Hall.
The Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office-Mandaluyong-Bagong Henerasyon Philippine Memory Team was composed of Johann Randall Abrina (Barangay Wackwack), Mark Anthony Castaneda (Barangay Old Zaniga), head coach RP and US chess master Almario Marlon Bernardino Jr. (former RTU Mandaluyong chess standout), Roberto Racasa (adopted son of Mandaluyong City), Erwin Balines (Barangay Harapin ang Bukas) and Axelyancy Cowan Tabernilla (Barangay Burol).Christopher Carandang, Mark Anthony Adarlo and Team Manager Aurelio "Reli"de Leon failed to attend the said occassion.
The Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office-Mandaluyong-Bagong Henerasyon Philippine Memory Team finished with a silver medal in the team competition during the 20th World 'Olympic' Memory Championship (WMC) at the Mount River Resort Hotel in Guangzhou, China last December. Aside from the team silver, the Pinoys also won an individual bronze medal.
"We are honored to present the six of the nine members of the Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office-Mandaluyong-Bagong Henerasyon Philippine Memory Team who won silver and bronze during the 20th World 'Olympic' Memory Championship (WMC) at the Mount River Resort Hotel in Guangzhou, China last December," said Mandaluyong City mayor Benhur Abalos Jr., one of the benefactor of the Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office-Mandaluyong-Bagong Henerasyon Philippine Memory Team which also backed up by Mandaluyong City representative Neptali "Boyet" Gonzales II, Bagong Henerasyon Party-List Representative Bernadette Herrera-Dy, PCSO general manager Atty. Joy Rojas II and chairman Margie Juico, Hermie Esguerra of Herma Group of companies, St. Francis Square?s Luke Rojas, Bicycle playing cards, ACCEL's Willy Ortiz, Dra. Regina Canlas of Makati Medical Center, PBA legend and former senator Robert "Sonny" Jaworski, Terry Capistrano, Philippine Sports Commission headed by it's chairman Richie Garcia and commissioner Chito Loyzaga, Philippine Olympic Committe president Peping Cojuangco and secretary-general Steve Hontiveros and Human Plus Pro Biotics.
Powerhouse China took home the team gold while Mongolia captured the bronze medal in the event participated by memory athletes from the US, Canada, United Kingdom, Germany, Italy, Poland, Japan, Uzbekistan, South Africa, India, Hongkong, Singapore, Malaysia, Maldives and Indonesia with 121 competitors.
Results of the PH Team members:
? Johann Randall Abrina, the 29-year-old UP Sports Psychology graduate from Mandaluyong bagged the bronze medal in the Historical/Future Dates category.
? Mark Anthony Castaneda from Mandaluyong became the first Filipino Grandmaster of Memory. The 24-year-old Rizal Technological University Mandaluyong BS ECE graduate memorized a 1,140 digit numbers in an hour en route to his 1st grandmaster (GM) norm. He memorized a deck of cards (equivalent to 52 playing cards) in 1 minute and 10 seconds in the speed card category for his 2nd GM norm and memorized 13 decks of cards (equivalent to 676 playing cards) in an hour to earn his third and final GM norm.
? Erwin Balines also from Mandaluyong City won 2 GM norms. The 23-year-old PUP-Manila BS ECE graduate memorized a 1,340 digit numbers in an hour for his first GM norm and memorized a deck of cards (equivalent to 52 playing cards) in 1 minute and 19 seconds in the speed card category for his 2nd GM norm.
