Up and coming Boholano boxing superstar Rey "Boom Boom" Bautista has been conferred as an adopted son of the city of Tagbilaran yesterday. In a resolution authored and sponsored by Tagbilaran councilor Danilo A. Bantugan and unanimously approved by the city's dads, Bautista, a native of Candijay, Bohol, has been adopted "to formalize ... as he has been considered as one and he also considers to be an adopted son as manifested in his various homecoming from various fights both here and abroad."
The 19-year-old Bautista, undefeated in 20 professional fights with 15 wins coming by way of knockout and holder of the WBO Asia-Pacific bantamweight title, has recently been making waves in the United States with his electrifying ring victories. Last May 20, Bautista demolished 31-year-old Columbian veteran Roberto Bonilla in 3 rounds at the Staples Center in Los Angeles in the undercard of the Barrera-Juarez boxing event. Bonilla had in his previous fight unsuccessfully challenged for the WBA super bantam world championship and was a holder of several regional titles.
Bautista's two other fights in the United States have also ended smashing victories. In his American debut in September last year, also at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, Bautista made short work of Felix Flores of Columbia. Also last year in December 23 at the Sycuan Resort and Casino in El Cajon, CA, Bautista came back from a second round knockdown to win convincingly against power banger Gerardo Espinoza of Mexico.
Bautista's manager and benefactor, the highly-respected Antonio L. Aldeguer whose famed ALA Boxing Club in Cebu is currently making headlines in the world boxing circuit, has earlier been conferred as an adopted son of the city of Tagbilaran for his role in molding young Boholano boxers into world class pugilists - including Rey "Boom Boom" Bautista.
