CEBU, Filipinas -- Despite a 20-month hiatus in his boxing career, former world champion Marvin "Marvelous" Sonsona of the Philippines showed that he still has the class, speed and the ring smarts of a top fighter by scoring a well-deserved wide unanimous decision victory over Mexico's super bantamweight champion Carlos Jacobo Saturday night (Oct 15) at the Hoops Dome in Cebu.

Official scores from the all-Filipino panel of judges were 98-91 twice and 97-92 all in favor of the 21-year old former world champ Marvin Sonsona (15-1-1, 12KO's) of General Santos City.

Only one knock down thrilled the crowd during the exciting combat.

It occurred by the end of round 8 when Sonsona unleashed an accurate lethal combination that sent the visiting Mexican against the ropes and down to the canvas.

The brave Carlos Jacobo managed beat the count delivered by top referee Bruce McTavish and the Mexican went on to finish the 10-rounds non-title fight.

These exclusive PhilBoxing photos tell how were those seconds in which Sonsona knocked down his Mexican opponent and had him near KO during the action of round 8.

Jason "Dodong" Canoy pulverized Erwin Pulvera

Cebuano super flyweight prospect Jason "Dodong" Canoy (12-1-1, 8KO's) wasted no time in dismantling fellow Cebuano Erwin Pulvera (3-12-3, 2KO's) in very first round of their combat Saturday night (Oct 15) at the Hoops Dome in Lapu Lapu, Cebu.

From the sound of the opening bell, Canoy attacked Pulvera with straight rights and violent combinations which quickly took a toll on the heavier late sub.

During the weight-in ceremony yesterday at new J Mall in Mandaue, Pulvera marked in at 122? while Jason Canoy registered 113? lbs.

Canoy tries to help Pulvera get back at his feet.

Regardless of the weight, "Dodong" Canoy was simply too fast and strong for his 28-year-old opponent.

Indeed, Pulvera could not resist the quick brutal accurate impacts from Canoy, succumbed in one of the corners and was counted out by referee.

Seconds later in a moment of genuine sportsmanship Jason Canoy tried to help the defeated Erwin Pulvera to stand up from the canvas, a meaningful gesture which was well perceived by the boxing fans congregated at the Hoops Dome in Cebu.

During the past weeks Canoy worked as sparring partner of Mexican former world champion Ramon "Principe" Garcia-Hirales at the Omega Gym in Banilad, Cebu City.

The Canoy vs Pulvera fight was one of the preliminary bouts of the "Back with a Vengeance" card presented by promoter Sammy Gello-ani of SGG Sport Promotions and televised live on AKTV.

Undefeated Jerry "Dangerous" Nardo decisions Illustrisimo

Undefeated super bantamweight Jerry "Dangerous" Nardo (11-0, 5KO's) of Bacolod scored a 6-rounds majority decision victory over Cebu's Ryan Illustrisimo (5-4, 1KO) Saturday night (Oct 15) at the Hoops Dome in Cebu.

It was a toe-to-toe affair in which none of the 20-year-old combatants visited the deck.

Official score cards were 59-55 (twice) and 57-57.

The Nardo vs Illustrisimo combat was one of the preliminary bouts of the "Back with a Vengeance" card presented by promoter Sammy Gello-ani of SGG Sport Promotions and broadcast live in the Philippines on AKTV.
