The Face-Off
In a press conference held a while ago at the Seaside Resto, Chetumal, Quintana Roo, Mexico, Mexican Minimumweight Contender Carlos Perez boldly made a statement before the press. ?Denver Cuello will not get that belt here in Mexico. I will not let this chance pass. I will show the world that Mexicans are still the better fighters and that this Filipino will go home frustrated.?
In reply, WBC International Minimumweight Champion Denver Cuello-Singwangcha told the crowd, ?Perez should stop his mouth from talking too much. We boxers talk with our fists. Make sure you can back up your mouth come Saturday. Be afraid of Filipinos who fight you in your own backyards. We don?t come here to lose. Quitters don?t win and winners never quit. See you on Saturday night!?
During the face-off, it was evident that Carlos Perez was the taller and bigger fighter. They were both cordial but a hidden element of animosity can be sensed after the tough exchange of words from both fighters.
Team Cuello in Mexico
According to Denver?s manager Aljoe Jaro, they are royally treated by Canelo Promotions. They have been housed in a grand hotel suite at the Hotel Los Cocos. The food is great and people have catered to all their needs. Canelo Promotions through its executives Hector Zapari, Marlon and Eddy Renoso has always made sure they are taken cared of. Also with Team Cuello is Carlito Vasquez of Las Vegas. Vasquez is a retired marine officer who has been helping Denver whenever he is in the US.
Another update Jaro disclosed to this writer is that Cuello does not have any problem with the weight. Denver currently weighs at 104.7 pounds. ?He doesn?t really starve himself. He eats well but he maintains the weight through training.?
?People in Mexico love Denver, they call him ?Bonito Pacquiao? since almost every Filipino they see in Mexico are always associated to the pound for pound king. The press love him because he is a jolly kid. He always accommodates everyone who approaches him. I am pretty sure he is going to be a big star here in Mexico and beyond,? said Hector Zapari of Canelo Promotions.
Cuello has also gotten along well with Canelo Alvarez himself. Saul is happy jogging and training with Denver. He even wishes to have him when he trains at Big Bear California in preparation for his November 26 bout. Canelo is excited to finally stage a world title fight for the Filipino after he gets the Silver Belt this Saturday.
World Title Fight in December
According to Canelo Promotions henchman Eddy Renoso, they had an agreement with Fausto Garcia of Boxeo de Gala, who handles Gannigan Lopez. After Ioka vacates the WBC World Minimumweight Belt, Cuello and Lopez shall fight for the belt probably on December 10 of this year. Renoso further said that these plans have the blessings of WBC?s Mauricio Sulaiman.
In as much as Denver is not looking past Carlos Perez, these plans on his career are the driving force that will make him focus on winning every fight put on his way. He admits he is so blessed by God for all these good things happening in his career. Who would have thought that his exciting journey will be fast-tracked towards a world title this way? ?Now that the world title belt is within sight, I will carefully watch my steps as I walk towards my goal. I want to make sure that I will get that title this year. I will fight with every strength I have for the honor of my country, my family and my team?, Cuello said in closing.
