Another Penalosa Debuts This Saturday.
CEBU, Philippines - It was a day of tough training for the star fighters of this Saturday's fight card at the Hoops Dome in Lapu Lapu City, Cebu. Boxers and trainers were in full action mode at the Abellana Boxing Gym ahead of their respective combats this Saturday night (Oct 1).
In the main event, IBF world ranked southpaw Michael Farenas, 27, will challenge experienced Edgar Gabejan for the Philippines GAB featherweight title.
Farenas comes back to the Philippines from a hard fought split decision victory against dangerous world rated Mexican warrior Fernando Beltran Jr. (35-6-1, 19KO's) last July in Hawaii.
In that war with Beltran, Farenas (32-3-3, 29KO's) was severely cut and was bleeding from his right eyebrow since round one. But Michael's combative spirit carried him through and saw him victorious in one of the most thrilling roughest nights of his life.
Meanwhile, his opponent Edgar Gabejan, won his last 12 rounds battle against Vinvin Rufino last June. With that win Edgar became the new Filipino national featherweight champ (GAB).
In the supporting bouts, 21-year-old rising star super bantamweight Doddie Boy Pe?alosa Jr. Doddie Boy has won all his six fights all by KO.
Now with a record of 6-0, 6KO's, the young Cebuano "Dudong Kampeon" will collide with the more experienced Donriel Marcos. For the young unbeaten Pe?alosa, this will be in one of the most difficult hurdles of his young ascending boxing career.
"This is a good fight for my son. Marcos is not easy," shared father and trainer Doddie Boy Pe?alosa Sr. "We will have to use skills and technique... move well, use a good jab. All can not be big power. Ability and speed are important."
The former world champion added: "I want to teach him (Doddie Boy Jr.) that a fighter can not depend only of a power knockout punch. A complete fighter knows how to walk the ring with confidence. Knows how and when to attack and knows how to defend himself. This fight is important."
In addition, super flyweight Dave Pe?alosa, 20, the second son of former world Doddie Boy Pe?alosa Sr. will be making his pro debut.
"Really, I did not encourage anybody to box. I'd rather have Dave in school. He is a smart good kid. But he prefers boxing. So, let's have a try. Let's see how he does (Saturday night)."
When the first round bell rings for him this Saturday night, Dave Pe?alosa will begin a professional boxing career which has brought honor and fame to his family as the Pe?alosa legend continues.
Dave will be following the steps of his uncles, his dad and his older brother. His obstacle Saturday night will be Cebuano southpaw John Edu Torabiso who has 2 professional fights. In his latest outing Torabiso draw against Junie Salogaol last June at the Cebu Coliseum.
In addition, popular super bantamweight Eden Sonsona "Manila's Golden Boy" will return to the Hoops Dome to rumble 10 rounds against Cagayan de Oro's dangerous Godwin Tubigon.
More fights complete the evening of boxing at the air conditioned Hoops Dome.
The Dudong Kampeon card is presented and promoted by promoter 2-time world champion Gerry Pe?alosa of GerryPens Promotions in Association "Family Rubbing Alcohol" and television channel GMA TV.
Doors at the Hoops Dome will open this Saturday October 1 at at 6pm.
