Cebu City ? Milan ?El Metodico? Melindo?s superb boxing skills were in full display for the ten rounds that he needed to stop the challenge of Mexico?s Francisco ?Chiquita? Rosas. Melindo was eager to trade punches at the center of the ring as he landed hard hooks to the body and head. Melindo?s offensive variety was the dominant factor in this bout as he bludgeoned Rosas with jabs, double hooks and uppercuts. As the fight reached the 5th round, blood started to drip from the Mexican?s nose. Rosas courageously fought back but Melindo?s methodical mauling continued. Milan gave Rosas different angles using his lateral movement and the ALA gym fighter was difficult to nail with a significant power punch.
Blood continued to pour out of Rosas? nose and mouth. His extra added weight may have protected him from an early knockout but Referee Bruce McTavish was already checking in with the Mexican corner past the 8th stanza. With no end in sight to the one-sided battering, Referee McTavish mercifully stopped the carnage before the start of the 11th round declaring Rosas as unfit to continue.
Melindo wins the vacant WBO Intercontinental flyweight title and continues his rise as a world title hopeful.
?EL LOBITO? OUTFOXES ?EL NI?O?
Rosbel ?El Lobito? Montoya scored a major win on Philippine soil as he outboxed young rising star Jason ?El Ni?o? Pagara in their ten round jr.welterweight battle. The protagonists were tentative early on but managed to trade hard hooks. But as the fight wore on, Montoya punches got stronger and more accurate. He counterpunched and picked his spots well.
The Mexican?s defense and chin were very significant in his victory as Pagara never landed a shot that could turn the fight around in his favor. Pagara sensed he was falling way behind but his last ditch stand in the 10th was defused by Montoya.
The scores ? 96-94, 99-91 and 97-93.
Because Montoya was a pound over the limit, the WBO Youth AsiaPacific 140 lb title is now vacant. This is Pagara?s second career loss.
THE BEGINNING OF GENESIS
Genesis ?Asukal? Servania was unbeaten but relatively unknown going into this fight and was considered a ?wild card entry? in his match-up against Mexico?s Gerson ?El Nene? Guerrero. But for eight lopsided rounds, Servania pounded Guerrero form pillar to post. Guerrero courageously stood his ground and tried to fire back but Servania punches increased in volume and power as the fight progressed.
The Mexican?s right eye was almost shut and Servania continued to have his way as Guerrero did not have an answer until the final bell. The scores 80-72, 79-73 and 78-74 underscored Servania?s dominance. This big win on a major televised card was his first against a foreign opponent and could very well mark the beginning of an excellent career.
FOR THE UNDERCARDS:
Ryan Bongcawil gave unbeaten Roma Rate all that he could handle and even knocked Rate down in the second round. This fight was a back and forth slugfest and Bongcawil showed termendous heart in taking the fight to the favored Rate.
Bongcawil was bleeding from the scalp due an accidental headbutt in the 5th ? which cost Rate a point ? and also had a swelling under his left eye. This did not stop him from trading shot for shot until the final bell. All three judges scored it 56-56 but the crowd loudly voiced their disagreement as they sided with the underdog Bongcawil. Melvin Gumban knocked out Junjie Lausa in the third round. Lausa wilted under Gumban?s body attack and took the ten count on one knee in the third. Official time 2:41.
Mark Acub used a series of hooks to the ribs to score a first round TKO win over Sehayahei Llanera in the first round. Llanera turned around grimacing in pain and held on to the ropes. Time ? 1:17. Ralph Lulu beat Jocel Gestopa by split decision in a closely contested six rounder. The scorecards read 58-56 Gestopa, and two judges had it 58-56 and 59-56 for Lulu.
Cris Leon outboxed and outfought Ivor Lastrilla for a majority decision verdict win in 4 rounds. Lastrilla was bleeding from the nose in the 3rd round. The scores 38-38, and two judges had it 39-37 for Leon.
In the first bout of the evening, Gilbert Magos beat Joven Hesona by majority decision. One judge scored 38-38 and two judges had it for Magos at 39-37.
