Giovanni Segura.
This author caught up with 108 Ring Magazine and pound for pound No. 8 boxer Giovanni Segura who is based in California right now. Here are some interesting excerpts from our casual conversation:
CYK: Como esta el Campeon? How are things going right now?
Giovanni: I?m fine hermano. Hitting the gym regularly in preparation for my next fight. I have relinquished my belts at 108 and am moving up to 112 division where I plan to clean up and collect all the belts.
CYK: When is your next fight and who are you fighting this time?
Giovanni: It is scheduled on September 15 in Monterrey, Mexico. It is just a tune-up fight against a yet to be named opponent.
CYK: If it is a tune-up fight, then who will be anticipated big fight at 112 lbs?
Giovanni: My manager Richard Mota and Zanfer Promotions are trying to arrange a fight against your countryman Brian Viloria and it is possible that the fight will be staged in the Philippines.
CYK: That is exciting news. How bad do you want this fight? Do you think the Viloria fight will be as easy as your KO victories against Calderon?
Giovanni: I would love to knock out Viloria! My power will kill him! I love knocking out cocky fighters. Viloria will be no exception.
CYK: Other Filipino fighters have expressed their interest in fighting you. Donnie Nietes, Denver Cuello-Singwangcha, Rodel Mayol. Are you willing to face these guys?
Giovanni: Of course! Yes, I would love to fight these guys. As for Cuello, I am not going down in weight so he can chase me up at 112. Mayol did not do anything against Calderon whom I knocked out easily. As for Nietes, he is a great champion and we can talk it over if he wins against Ramon Hirales and is willing to meet me at 112 pounds. Of course this all depends with my manager and promoter but I am the boxer here and I am telling the world that I am fighting anyone placed before me.
CYK: But among the Filipino Boxers, who would you love to fight the most?
Giovanni: Of course Manny Pacquiao for the money!!!! (Laughing out loud). I am kidding. I would love to fight any Pinoy boxer. I have high respect for the courage of Filipinos on the ring.
CYK: Thank you so much for your time champ. I am more than happy for this chance to talk to you. We will wait for you in the Philippines. I am 100% sure that a Segura vs. Viloria fight wil be a total sold out and will be a war. What is your message to your Filipino fans?
Giovanni: I am very excited to fight in the Philippines. It is a beautiful country. I can?t wait to be there. I have lots of Filipino friends. They are nice. But when I fight Viloria, it?s business. There will be no mercy and I promise to give you guys a clean and a great fight!
CYK: Gracias hermano. Will talk to you again soon. God bless you my friend.
Giovanni: Bienvenido a mi amigo. Anytime bro!
