I have always been wondering why title fights can be fought between two Mexicans without any big deal while such idea seems like a big Taboo here in the Philippines. Why can?t two Filipinos fight for a World Title? Imagine the Marquez vs. Vazquez or the Morales-Barrera Trilogies or the De la Hoya-Chavez Classic. Those fights did not look incestuous or awkward. On the contrary they were certified barnburners and were fight of the year candidates.
I can?t imagine boxing history without the above-mentioned legendary match-ups. It is because of this fact that my mind was tickled by the idea of watching our best Pinoy boxers against each other. I would like to share with you this fantasy fights which I would love to happen.
Donaire vs. Viloria
This will settle the issue of Viloria?s victory over Donaire during both boxers? amateur days in the US years ago. Plus there seems to be bad blood between the two Fil-Am pugs. My prediction, Donaire by KO.
Nietes vs Cuello
This will be a total war! Nietes? technical skills versus Cuello?s aggression, speed and power. Nietes can negate Cuello?s come forward style with his slick moves and over-all ring generalship but Cuello can KO Nietes if he catches him with a good punch. Cuello is a total package in terms of style but Nietes is the more experienced veteran. My prediction, if the fight goes the distance, Nietes by UD, otherwise Cuello by KO.
Melindo vs. Mayol
Power vs. Speed. Mayol?s power can bring Melindo down but the question is can he hit Milan? Milan is fast and can hit Mayol but question is can he finish him? My prediction, Melindo by UD.
Concepcion vs. Bautista
This fight will be power vs. power. Both fighters rely on their brute force. However, Boom-Boom is not the same fighter after his wrist injury and operation. Another weakness of the Boholano is his lack of lateral movements which makes him very hittable. My prediction, Bernabe Concepcion by KO.
These match-ups are but products of my boxing addict mind. I would love to see how our own fighting prides will do against each other. Whether this happens or not doesn?t really matter. But I?m sure any boxing fan will be driven by his curiosity and would love to watch these fights.
On the lighter note I would like to greet my officemate Stephen Van Sancho, a belated Happy Birthday. The carbonara was great!
