TAGUM City, Dec. 28 --? Philippine Boxing Federation (PBF) junior featherweight king Cris Besmanos of Sultan Kudarat knocked out challenger Rolan Estancia of Compostela Valley in 43 seconds of the seventh round to retain his title last Wednesday night at the University of Mindanao gym here.
The 25-year old Besmanos landed a right cross on Estancia's jaw that saw the challenger's head hitting the canvas. Estancia, who kept clinching since the start of the second round failed to recover from the knockdown. Besmanos improved his record to 12 wins with 3 KOs, 6 loses and 2 draws.
Besmanos, handled by Vic Adriano of Davao City, was awarded a championship belt by Dr. Daniel Lu, vice-mayor of Sto. Tomas and Allan Rello, vice-mayor of Tagum.
Lu and Rello are also president and vice-president, respectively of the sponsoring Vice Mayor's League of the Philippines-Davao del Norte Chapter, which co-presented it with lawyer Cres Dan Bangoy.
In the main event, International Boxing Federation (IBF) No. 11 junior flyweight contender Wendell "Braveheart" Janiola of Cebu suffered a shocking loss to No. 14 rated Julius Alcos of Sto. Tomas via a unanimous decision. Alcos of the Willie Neri Stable used his quickness by eluding Janiola's vaunted punching prowess. Alcos, also ranked World Boxing Federation (WBF) No. 10, kept on clinching and backpedalling after throwing left-right crosses since the start of the 10-rounder bout.
Although shorter by two inches, Alcos was more clever against the 5-foot-4 Janiola, also ranked World Boxing Federation (WBF) No. 5 and World Boxing Council (WBC) No. 33 contender. Janiola, who tried on urging Alcos to a square fight, suffered a cut on his nose due to an accidental headbutt in the seventh round.
All three judges scored in favor of Alcos. Judge Mario de Ramos (99-91), John Kenneth Improso (96-94) and Boy Acojedo (98-92). The win improved Alcos' record to 9 wins against 2 defeats with 2 KO's, and lines him up for possible big-money offers on the horizon. Janiola, who last saw action in June this year, dropped to 16-4 with 8 KO's.
In other bouts, comebacking Ariel Austria beat journeyman Sony Alpara by unanimous decision (6 rds.-118 lbs.), Argie Marapao crushed Nelson Guindolan also by unanimous decision (6 rds.-105 lbs.), Arnold Saniego survived a third round knocked down to beat Amiro Ricablanca also by UD; Harry Cahapon stopped Rey Pilipino in 1:39 of the second round by a technical knockout (6 rds.-130 lbs.); Jessie Albaracin settled to a majority draw with Rolando Omila (4 rds.-118 lbs).
"Proceeds of the boxing promotion will be used for the construction of the Gawad Kalinga building in New Panabo next month," said Vice Mayor Lu. Aside from Lu and Rellon, the main sponsors were vice-mayors Edgardo Timbol of Kapalong, Dr. Joseph
Parrenas (Asuncion), Ruperto Cagape Jr. (Panabo), Austerio Obenza (Igacos), Mario Jumaway (Bejuali), Alexander Sibogan (Talaingod), Dr. Tessie Domecillo (San Isidro), Alberto Sarin (Carmen) and Nestor Alcoran (New Corella).
The other backers were Emperador Brandy, Gov. Gelacio Gementiza, Vice-Gov. Anthony del Rosario, Mayor Rey Uy, Pepsi Cola, Davao Reyer Transport Service, Tagum Premium Plywood, MAF Tractor Parts. and Tagum Mayor Rey Uy.
