RP MEMORY TEAM TO COMPETE IN UK MEMORY MEET

THE Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office (PCSO)-Mandaluyong, Bagong Henerasyon RP Memory Team players are ready for the 2010 UK Open International Memory Championships in London from August 26 and 27, reported RP Team Manager Aurelio "Reli" De Leon yesterday.

The competitors include Roberto Racasa and Johann Randall Abrina and RP delegation head coach Almario Marlon Bernardino Jr.

"I personally believe that Filipino possess skills and talents to excel in this kind of mind sports game," said RP Team Manager Aurelio "Reli" De Leon. "This is the first time that RP was represented here," added De Leon. "We would like to thank the British Embassy in Manila headed by Ambassador Stephen Lilie who granted the RP Memory Team visas on time."

Mandaluyong City mayor Benhur Abalos, the Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office (PCSO) through it's General Manager (GM) Atty. Jose Ferdinand "Joy" Rojas II and chairman Margie Juico, representative Bernadette Herrera-Dy of Bagong Henerasyon Party-List, sportsman Hermie Esguerra of Herma Group of companies, Terry Capistrano and Willy Ortiz of ACCEL backed the Filipino campaign in this prestigious event, hosted by the MWB Business Exchange in One Kingdom Street, Paddington in London.

Besides the London competition, Racasa, a former PUP chess player and "kristo" or bet taker in a cockfigthing arena from Barangka, Marikina and Abrina, a registered nurse and a sports psychology UP student from Barangay WackWack, Mandaluyong will also compete against the world's brigthest memory athletes in the World Memory Championships at the Baiyun International Convention Center from December 1 to 6 in Guangzhou, China.

The Filipinos also backed up by PBA legend Robert Jaworski, Dr and Dra Manny and Regina Canlas, AVP for marketing Cheryl Felizardo of Natrapharm-Patriot Group Inc., Atty. Sixto Esquivas, Filway Marketings Inc. CEO/ President Hector Tagaysay and Bugsy Promotions will be going up against reigning and three-time World Champion Ben Pridmore, past World Champion Andi Bell, James Ponder and Richard Bowdler of the United Kingdom, Dai Griffiths of Wales, Simon Reinhard and Boris Konrad of Germany, M?cahit Ak?z of Istanbul, Turkey, Rick de Jong of the Netherlands, David Duchovny of the United States, Mattias Ribbing of Sweden and Dagfinn Hammar of Norway, among others.

BENEFITS OF THE MEMORY SPORTS GAME

Christopher "Chris" Day, general secretary for the championships, said this kind of skill has a very practical use. "There's not one thing that we do as individuals that doesn't rely on memory. Everything relies on memory and without it, we would have no language. Whether learning subjects for the school curriculum or trying to scale the career ladder, the better your memory the better your performance," he said.

"According to our team observation enhancing memory will give good chance of a better grades for a student and hopefully will be the answer to controversial debate to increase or not to increase the number of school years of a students," said RP Team Manager Aurelio "Reli" De Leon.

"Memory game is a sport with social commitments, to help students, to help crime buster, to help ordinary citizen in their daily activities," added De Leon.

The annual competition was instituted to challenge the limits of human memory consisting of 10 events like binary digits (5 minutes/30 min.), numbers (5/30 min), spoken numbers, speed cards, cards (10/30min/1 hour), random words, historic/future dates, names and faces, abstract images.
