WBC International Super Bantamweight Champion Balweg Bangoyan of Jose Abad Santos, Davao del Sur gets the biggest break of his boxing career as he faces WBC World Super Bantamweight Toshiaki Nishioka of Japan tomorrow April 30, 2010 at Nihon Budokan, Tokyo, Japan.
Let us try to take a closer look at each fighter?s resume and assess the chances of our very own Pinoy Contender against the Champion of Japan.
Bangoyan has a professional record of W15-KO6-L0 while Nishioka has it W35-KO22-L4. Bangoyan?s most noteworthy opponent so far was Kenyan Sande Otieno whom he defeated via technical decision. Otieno is the same guy beaten by top featherweight Bernabe Concepcion. Nishioka?s name rang a bell in the world boxing scene when he knocked out former world champ Jhonny Gonzalez in the third round. He was also impressive in winning the world title belt from Mexican Genaro Garcia via twelfth round TKO. This fight is Bangoyan?s first match outside the Philippines. Thus, the experience advantage clearly goes in favor of the Japanese Champ.
For the tale of the tape, Nishioka stands at 5? 6.5? with a 69? reach while Bangoyan is at 5? 5.5? with a reach of 67?. Once again, Nishioka has the physical advantages in this fight.
Bangoyan is the clear underdog in this fight. Japan is further known for unfair hometown decisions. You need to knock your opponent out for you to win or else you?ll go home shouting you just got robbed. Thus for Balweg to win, it is imperative that he knocks out his opponent and grab the belt in such a convincing fashion.
I would like to quote the legendary writer Thomas Hauser when he said that ? the tale of the tape doesn?t measure the size of a fighter?s heart?. People never realize that we Pinoys may be the smaller race size wise, but we have the biggest hearts. The Mayweathers have been blabbing about the fictional A-Side Meth which our guerillas allegedly used against the American colonizers thus making our soldiers bulletproof. That this is the kind of PED being used by Pacquiao and can never be detected by any test. We patriots know it?s no PED. It is the natural heart of warriors which we Filipinos have.
I have seen some of Balweg?s fights. The kid has speed and power. He is stepping up against a highly formidable opponent who has knocked out elite oppositions. But the Davao Hitman should not fear. They are wearing the same size of gloves in an equally sided ring. The chance is there. He only needs to put his whole heart into the fight, listen to his corner and I always recommend prayer.
A win by Bangoyan will put him in the league of Current Pinoy Champs together with WBO Welterweight and Pound for Pound King Manny Pacquiao, WBC Light Flyweight Champ Rodel Mayol, WBO Minimumweight King Donnie ?Ahas? Nietes and IBF/IBO Flyweight Champ Nonito Donaire, Jr.
