Ellis wins again, Maniatis continues to nurture half-Pinoy prospect

The Victorian promoter of the year Peter Maniatis gave young half-Pinoy prospect Heath “The Heat” Ellis his second fight in a month last night. The IBF Pan Pacific and interim WBC Asian Boxing Council welterweight champion over given a quick six round fight against a very experienced foe, Aswin Cabuy in the semi-main event of a five fight card with the headline fight being China’s Wang Ya Nan, who successfully defeated Charity Mukami by a unanimous points decision.
Ellis, nephew of former IBF super-featherweight and three-division IBO world champion Lester Ellis who ringside to watch his nephew fight three-time Indonesian champion Aswin Cabuy in a shutout unanimous points win.
Cabuy is a solid, muscular Papua New Guinean who calls Indonesia home. This was an acid test for Ellis, who just barely turned twenty-one years old in recent months. Aswin Cabuy was a very awkward, seasoned and very experienced opponent that was a step-up in class for Ellis who tested the half-Pinoy fighter for the full six rounds.
With Cabuy being a southpaw, it took Ellis two rounds to his range and work out his unorthodox style. Ellis hit the visitor with a crisp left hook that sliced through the cheek of Cabuy like a blade. Ellis knew he was going to be a tricky operator who has fought some of the best International standard Australian’s in the last six months. This includes IBO Intercontinental and IBF Australasian light-middleweight champion Rob Medley who is now fighting former two-time WBA super-middleweight world champion Anthony Mundine next month. Cabuy also fought current IBO Intercontinental and IBF Australasian light-middleweight champion Rob Medley who is fighting former two-time WBA super-middleweight and current IBO middleweight champion Anthony Mundine for the vacant IBO light-middleweight world title in coming months. Cabuy also put up a very respectable performance against current WBO Oriental light-middleweight champion and WBO #8 world rated Ryan Waters and also fought undefeated current OPBF welterweight champion Oyewale Omotoso and WBO African light-middleweight champion King Davidson. The list is the who’s who of the Asia Pacific region in the welterweight/light-middleweight division.
Promoter Peter Maniatis knows he has a star in the making but he still wants to bring his star along slowly but surely, step by step and by not jumping the gun. Maniatis was delighted with the win and said that Cabuy “was no easy beat and he had been around”.
On the undercard, Filipino Flash Villacura was unluckily defeated by Australian super-bantamweight champion Mark Quon on a three-round technical points decision.
Villacura was cut badly underneath the right eyebrow by an accidental head clash. Quon started the fight fast and was easily ahead at the time of the stoppage, although Villacura was only getting started at the time of the stoppage.
