TEPIC, NAYARIT -- WBO minimumweight champion Donnie Nietes and WBO number 3 bantamweight contender Z Gorres, both from ALA Gym of the Philippines, arrived today (Monday night) in Tepic, Nayarit, a coastal town west of Mexico City for their much awaited bouts on Saturday at El Palenque de la Feria here. Nietes will defend his title against Manuel Vargas from Jalisco while Gorrez will face Cruz Carbajal from nearby Veracruz.
Nietes and Gorres, together with ALA Promotions Vice-President Dennis Canete, trainer Edmund Villamor, boxer AJ Banal and this writer, were brought to the Tijuana airport at noon by well-known Mexican promoter Guillermo Brito and then took a Volaris plane to Guadalajara arriving 3 hours later where they were then met by the promoter's representative. The group then proceeded to Tepic by land for another 3 hours trip passing by Tequila plantations as cactus plants dotted the landscape.
Nietes and Gorres were the first boxers to arrive here. They were whisked to a local TV station RTN for a live interview before they were even brought to their hotel.
"Although we had a long trip from yesterday and today," ALA Vice-President Dennis Canete said, "we arrived at the venue early so we have plenty of time to rest and get acclimated to the place. This is good for us unlike the last fight of Donnie [Nietes] in Oaxaca where we arrived on a Thursday just two days before the fight."
The group had a hearty dinner at the Fray Junipero Serra Hotel in downtown Tepic where they are staying before calling it a day.
The September 12 bout, dubbed Latin Fury XI, will be co-headlined by Julio Cesar Chavez, Jr vs Jason LeHoullier and Fernando Montiel vs Alejandro Valdez for the WBO bantamweight title and is promoted by Top Rank and Zanfer Promotions in association with the Nayarit State Government and will be telecast on pay per view in the United States.
