At exactly 2:00pm Eastern today (2:00am Manila Time, Friday / 6:00pm UTC Thursday), Golden Boy Promotions President Oscar de la Hoya and CEO Richard Schaefer are expected to announce the De La Hoya-Pacquiao megafight in an international media conference call from its offices in downtown Los Angeles.
In an earlier invitation to the media, Golden Boy withheld what it was going to announce, only stating that "De La Hoya and Schaefer will make announcement regarding ten-time World Champion's immediate future."
However ESPN.com and the Los Angeles Times have quoted sources close to the situation that the announcement would be for the De La Hoya-Pacquiao fight set on Dec. 6 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. ABC Channel 7 of Los Angeles also reported Wednesday afternoon that the fight was already official.
Pacquiao himself had also released an official statement a few hours ago through his lawyer Jeng Gacal confirming that he had already come to an agreement to fight De La Hoya on Dec. 6.
The fight between boxing's most bankable star who is saying he is on his farewell fight and the current pound-for-pound king on the planet which to most boxing observers is like a fantasy fight because of the weight and height disparity between the two combatants, started as a whisper last year that grew into a rumor that ended up in the negotiating table two weeks ago. Unable to reach an agreement on the PPV percentage sharing, the fight was stalled and appeared to be dead but was revived a few days ago when De La Hoya himself appeared to be determined to make the fight.
The De La Hoya-Pacquiao bout is expected to rival the highest grossing fight in history between De La Hoya and Floyd Mayweather, Jr. last year and is also expected to cross borders and make boxing stay on the headlines around the world in the next few months.
