Filipino knockout artist Ranee 'KO Kid' Ganoy will arrive in Cebu tonight from Australia via PAL PR 865 as his July 19 date with tough Thailander Sapapetch Sor Sakaorat at the Cebu Coliseum draws near. His manager Hermie Bohol accompanies him on the trip.
Ganoy (24-10-2 20KOs) has been fighting in Australia during the last four years where he made a name for himself ang gained a lot of followers down under. After losing to Michael Katsidis on Aug. 19, 2005, Ganoy never looked back and had racked up seven successive victories six by knockouts. One of his victim during this run was former world champion Robbie Peden who got his IBF super featherweight title by knocking out Nate Campbell, the current 3-belted unified lightweight champion.
Local fans will have a chance to see Ganoy fight in person after a long absence. If Ganoy successfully disposes his Thai opponent in a 10-round contest on Saturday, promoter Sammy Gello-ani plans to bring Ganoy to the US to start his campaign in the boxing capital of the world where he hoped Ganoy will be in the mix in the most star-studded division in boxing, the lightweight division.
Pound-for-pound king Manny Pacquiao is currently the epicenter of the division after he destroyed former WBC kingpin David Diaz. Meanwhile Nate Campbell holds the other three titles and Joel Casamayor is recognized by The Ring as their champion. Other notable names who are in the mix are former champion Juan Diaz, Joan Guzman, Michael Katsidis and new entrants Juan Manuel Marquez and Edwin Valero.
The July 19 "Collision at the Coliseum" boxing event is co-headlined by young undefeated prospect Cisco Morales and veteran Bert Batawang and is promoted by SGG Promotions in cooperation with the Cebu City Government, Viva Sports, Tanduay and Elasto Seal. Tickets are now on sale at the Cebu Coliseum, Gaisano South with ringside tickets at P300, lower box at P200 and upper box at P100.
