CARE conducts 6.5mile open water in Davao Gulf

THIRTY young boys and girls swam 6.5mile open water from Davao Gulf as part of their training course for the Water Safety Search and Rescue [WASSAR] for Junior Lifeguards.

The final open water swim started in Sharks Beach Resort in Down Dawis Beach near Dawis Baywalk in Digos City.

A wake-up call at 4am with exercises to build stamina. It started at 4:30am and ended at around 11:03am.

Two pump boats were hired to carry the logistics, snacks and refill during water break for the swimmers.

It was conducted by the CAREGROUP headed by George Garcia, training director and Executive Vice President of CAREGROUP in Digos City.

“We requested backup support from the Coast Guard Sta. Cruz Station for our CARE Group,” said Garcia.

Only two swimmers both elementary grads, were hit by jelly fish.

“They were treated with vinegar and later resumed swimming again,” said Garcia, who was part of the sweeper.

Spasms and cramps are normal even in open water.

“The current is very strong, the currents are weak and the movements are still there after clarifying, sprint and swim at the end survival swim for 18 kilometers total travel from Sharks Beach Resort,” said Garcia.

The event started last July 11 with participants who are elementary-aged children, ranging from 7 to 14 years old.
