A TRAINING course for Water Safety Search and Rescue [WASSAR] for Junior Lifeguards is being conducted by CAREGROUP at the Provincial Capitol Olympic size swimming pool in Digos City.

“It started last July 11 and 12, and will continue July 18–19, 25–26, and August 1,” said George Garcia, training director and Executive Vice President of CAREGROUP.

The participants are elementary-aged children, ranging from 7 to 14 years old.

“Our group, which backs up the team, includes certified lifeguards, swimming instructors, and WASSAR instructors!” said Garcia.

They are conducting a 6.5-mile open-water survival swim in Barangay Dawis, here in Digos City.

The swim starts in the open water and heads toward the Dawis beach area, specifically the baywalk.

Garcia said the parents requested this WASSAR training for their children—specifically a Junior Lifeguard course.

“We have only had two sessions so far, yet 14 swimming strokes have already been introduced,” he said.

Garcia said “the remaining time is for refining and polishing their technique to ensure proper form.”

“Next weekend, the overnight sessions begin, focusing on search and rescue procedures,” said Garcia.

It is a Davao del Sur swimming club, but the instructors are from a CARE group. The majority of the participants are medalists.

“This is part of the group's Disaster Management program, designed to equip them with survival skills at a young age,” said Garcia.
