Bernardino to play in Malaysia and France chess championship

Filipino and United States chess master Almario Marlon Bernardino Jr. will head to Penang, Malaysia and to France with hopes of improving his world ranking aside from bringing more honor for the country.

Accompanied by his playing coach Atty. Rodolfo Enrique "Rudy" Rivera who is also an Executive Chess champion, fondly called Marlon in the chess world, will see action at the Penang Chess Festival slated from December 18 to 23, 2025 in Penang, Malaysia.

The 48-year-old Bernardino, a veteran sportswriter and radio commentator is aiming to surpass his 7th overall finish in last year's edition.

Bernardino is also scheduled to represent the country in the XXII edition of the Bois-Colombes, Chess Master International tournament, which will take place at the Complex Sportif Smirlian, Bois-Colombes, France from December 26 to 30, 2025.

His international campaigns are being supported by the Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office (PCSO) Director Imelda Arcilla Papin, ALC Group of Companies Chairman and CEO D. Edgard Cabangon, Mandaluyong City Mayor Carmelita "Menchie"Aguilar- Abalos, Congresswoman Alexandria "Queenie" Pahati- Gonzales, Sportsman Marlon Manalo and Games and Amusement Board (GAB) Chairman Atty. Francisco Rivera.

"I hope to do well in these events (Malaysia, France)," said Bernardino.

Bernardino is fresh from winning the Moonroast Coffee Rapid Open Chess Tournament last Sunday at Barangay Poblacion, Makati City.
It shall be recalled that Bernardino won the 2024 Laos International Chess Open held at the Parkson Naga Mall in Vientiane City, Laos.
Bernardino is the former top player of Barangay Malamig, Rizal Technological University chess team during his college days in the mid 90's. -Marlon Bernardino-
