THERE are 11 martial arts in the coming Batang Pinoy 2025 slated on October 25 to 30 in General Santos City.
These are Arnis, Boxing, Kickboxing, Karate, Judo, Wrestling, Jiu-jitsu, Taekwondo, Wushu, Pencak Silat and Muay Thai.
Arnis, also known as kali or eskrima/escrima, is the national martial art of the Philippines.
This emphasizes weapon-based fighting with sticks, knives, bladed weapons, and various improvised weapons, as well as "open hand" techniques without weapons.
Davao City is sending 24 athletes and four coaches in BP 2025.
Next is boxing, which is a combat sport and martial art, taking place in a boxing ring.
It involves two people – usually wearing protective equipment, such as protective gloves, hand wraps, and mouthguards – throwing punches at each other for a predetermined amount of time.
Boxing will have nine boxers and four coaches – that’s including two teachers, who will act as the coaches while the assistant coaches are the real coaches of the boxers.
Kickboxing, on the other hand, is a full-contact hybrid martial art and boxing type based on punching and kicking.
The fight takes place in a boxing ring, normally with boxing gloves, mouth guards, shorts, and bare feet to favor the use of kicks.
Kickboxing will have more athletes than boxing with 22 players and three coaches.
Modern Karate is primarily a striking art that uses punches and kicks, traditional karate training also employs throwing and joint locking techniques.
It will have 29 karate-kas and three coaches.
Judo is an unarmed modern Japanese martial art, combat sport, Olympic sport (since 1964), and the most prominent form of jacket wrestling competed internationally.
Judo will have 26 players and three coaches.
Wrestling is a martial art, combat sport, and form of entertainment that involves grappling with an opponent and striving to obtain a position of advantage through different throws or techniques, within a given ruleset.
It will only have 10 athletes and two coaches.
Jiu-jitsu is a self-defense system, martial art, and combat sport based on grappling, ground fighting, and submission holds.
It is primarily a ground-based fighting style and focuses on taking one's opponent down to the ground, gaining a dominant position, and using a number of techniques to force them into submission via joint locks, chokeholds, or compression locks.
Jiu-jitsu will have 15 players and four coaches.
Taekwondo is a Korean martial art and combat sport involving primarily kicking techniques and punching.
Taekwondo, which is mourning the death of Master Hyoung Joo Kim, fondly known as the Father of Taekwondo in Mindanao, has the biggest delegation with 52 athletes and eight coaches.
Wushu, a Chinese martial art, is an official event at the World Games, Asian Games, East Asian Youth Games, Southeast Asian Games, World Combat Games, and in various other multi-sport events.
Wushu has two kinds – Taolu and Sanda.
Taolu will have 10 players and two coaches while Sanda will be represented by 13 athletes and three coaches.
Pencak silat is a full body fighting form incorporating strikes, grappling, and throwing, in addition to weaponry. Every part of the body is used and subject to attack.
Pencak silat, a class of related Indonesian martial arts, is composed of 21 players and two coaches.
Muay Thai is a Thai martial art and full-contact combat sport that uses stand-up striking, sweeps, and various clinching techniques.
