INDIO, California. Challenger Jayson Vayson disagreed with his coach Allan Alegria’s decision to throw in the towel at 1:41 of the seventh round but accepted his fate just the same as WBA/WBO minimumweight champion Oscar Collazo of Puerto Rico retained his unified 105-pound titles at the Fantasy Springs Resort and Casino here Saturday night (yesterday morning, Manila time).

Vayson insisted he wasn’t hurt and could continue despite heavy bombardment from Collazo. “Kaya ko suntok niya,” he said. “‘Di ako na-groggy, hindi naging blurred ang paningin ko. Balak ko sana paspasan siya simula ng eighth round. Na-shock ako na tinigil ni coach Allan. Nilapitan ko si Collazo pagkatapos ng laban at sabi ko, kung aakyat siya sa 108, aabangan ko siya at magkita uli kami. Sagot niya, OK next time.”

Vayson’s manager Brico Santig said he backed Alegria’s decision. “Yung fight commissioner tinanong ako kung tuloy ang laban at sunud-sunod mga suntok kay Jayson na walang sagot,” said Santig. “Sinabi ko kay Allan itigil na. Matapag si Jayson at ayaw sumuko pero proteksyon niya ang priority namin. Marami pang laban na susunod, makakabalik siya.”

California State Athletic Commission representative Mark Relyea confirmed Alegria’s decision. “The rule is only the chief second can hold back his fighter and call for a stop,” he said. “When the referee (Thomas Taylor) saw the gesture to stop it, that’s when he waved it off.”

Vayson was off to a hot start and appeared to take the first round when he was dropped by a clubbing right to the top of the head. He got up quickly but took the mandatory eight-count. Vayson surprised Collazo, a southpaw, with a two-fisted attack in the second and forced the champion to backpedal. Collazo regained the upper hand in the third but Vayson wouldn’t back down and had a slight edge in the fourth. Then, Collazo began to bully and overpower Vayson, pushing him against the ropes. In the sixth, Vayson’s work rate started to drop. The wear-and-tear caused by Collazo’s persistent body assault slowed down Vayson. In the seventh, Collazo pushed Vayson down as he went all out to finish the job. Collazo repeatedly banged Vayson’s body without reply, prompting Alegria to hoist the white flag.

Judges Fernando Villareal, Zachary Scott and Rudy Barragan saw it an identical 59-54 after six, awarding Vayson only one round. Collazo raised his record to 13-0 with 10 KOs while Vayson’s mark dipped to 14-2-1, with eight KOs.
