Pat McCormack showed his supreme class and delivered a scintillating display to send the sold-out crowd at Sunderland Live home happy after he defeated Mexico’s Miguel Parra in an Eliminator for the WBA World Welterweight Title.
The Team GB Olympic hero, who won Silver at the 2020 Tokyo Games, was in imperious form late on which forced the red corner to retire their man at the end of the ninth round.
McCormack, speaking to in-ring reporter Jamie Ward after a successful night headlining in his hometown, said: “I broke him [Miguel Parra] down. He’s top 15 in the world, so I’m buzzing to make that statement in the ninth round. It was tough. Some of the shots I was hitting him with were just bouncing off him. He’s definitely the toughest man I’ve faced. He kept on coming. But I felt I was getting stronger as the fight went on. If Conah Walker wants it next, we’ll have it. I think I can beat him. I want the British, European or Commonwealth Title shot next – I want to start getting the belts. Thank you for everyone who came out to support me. It’s great to bring these nights to the North East.”
In the co-main event, Troy Williamson became the new English Super Middleweight Champion after stopping Mark Dickinson in the ninth round of a thrilling North East derby – and one DAZN analyst Sunny Edwards hailed as a ‘Fight of the Year’ contender.
In a back-and-forth battle, Williamson came on strong in the penultimate round with a brilliant barrage of blows, dropping his rival with cracking combination, before the referee intervened at the second time of asking.
Williamson said: “I’m back! Firstly, I want to thank everyone who has come out and supported me tonight. I’ve got a lot of people here tonight and I could have sold even more. Mark’s a great fighter. I’ve had a few losses and I’ve even had a lot of close friends who have stopped speaking to me because of that. So to everyone who’s come out tonight and stuck by me, through the highs and the lows, I can’t thank them enough. There’s a lot more to come. There’s no easy fights at this level – and no disrespect to the English Title, but I know I am above this level.”
Teenage Heavyweight wonderkid Leo Atang produced another devastating knockout highlight reel as he floored Cristian Uwaka to extend his flawless record to 2-0, 2KOs. Matchroom Boxing CEO, Frank Smith, revealed afterwards that the youngster will be out again next month on the Allen-Makhmudov undercard on Saturday, October 11 at Sheffield’s Utilita Arena.
And Atang, 18, said: “I tried to be calm and look for the openings. When I found the right spot, that’s when I went for it. The main thing is that I won the fight. Boxing is my life – it means so much to me. That’s what keeps me so focused. And with everyone coming out to support me again tonight, it means so much to me. So, it’s important that I impress and they get their money’s worth when they are spending their hard-earned to support me. I’ll be back in the gym on Monday. Activity is key. I’m nowhere near the finished article of where I want to be but I’m going to keep on working hard each day. I can’t wait to go again in Sheffield on October 11.”
Former World Champion Sandy Ryan put on an impressive showing to underline her ambitions to rule the Welterweight division once more as she overcame a game Jade Grierson in a unanimous points decision, with the judges scoring the bout 98-92, 99-91, 100-90.
Ryan said: “It meant everything [to win] because I had to get the fight back in me. You can see tonight that I enjoyed it, and there was that aggression. Jade [Grierson] was a tough girl and she really did set out to do what she said she was going to. She held in there and I respect her. You all know what I’m about – if they want to put me in a World Title fight next, then great. Let’s do it. I know Lauren price very well, we worked together at Team GB. She’s a great professional. She’s got the belts so it would be a great fight to have. Either way, it’s good to be back – and it’s good to be back on UK soil.”
In the prelims, Cameron Vuong opened his account under new trainer Ben Davison in style with an assured display in his native North East as the Lightweight improved his record to 9-0, 4 KOs by defeating Argentina’s Reuquen Facundo Arce 80-72 on points.
Brighton Super Bantamweight Adam Maca extended his immaculate record as a professional with a brilliant a second successive knockout as the proud Albanian teen halted Spanish opponent Francisco Rodriguez in fourth and final round.
The Greatest of all Time, Katie Taylor, watched on at ringside to witness who many believe will emulate her Undisputed success and one day rule female boxing,as 19-year-old Bantamweight sensation Tiah-Mai Ayton made it two wins from two with a breathtaking fourth-round stoppage over Lydie Bialic.
And York youngster Brad Casey celebrated a winning start to life in the professional ranks in the opening bout as the 18-year-old Cruiserweight put on an impressive performance in his 40-34 points victory over Goran Kozul.
