Highly popular Mexican slugger Isaac 'Pitbull' Cruz dropped and dominated late substitute Omar Salcido over 10 rounds to capture the WBC Interim super lightweight title on the undercard of the Pacquiao-Barrios welterweight title fight at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas Saturday night (Sunday in Manila). Judges scores: Max DeLuca 100-88, Don Trella 99-89 and Steve Weisfeld 99-89 all in favor of Cruz.
Cruz was scheduled to face Angel Fierro in a rematch of their barnburner fight last February but Fierro was forced to withdraw Friday due to a medical emergency. You have to give props to Salcido, who was scheduled to fight in a non-televised fight on the undercard, to take the fight in the last minute.
Salcido who at 5'7" has a 3-inch advantage to the 5'4" Cruz but there is not a problem bull-strong Mexican who found his way fighting inside the whole night dishing out punishing body punches and looping lefts and rights to the head. Salcido was forced to neutralize Cruz's attacks by holding which cost him a point later in the fight after he was deducted by Referee Mark Nelson for excessive holding.
Cruz put on the finishing touches in the last two round by dropping Salcido to the canvas and almost stopping his fellow Mexico as the clock winded down.
Cruz now upped his record to 28-3-1, 18 KOs while Salcido dropped to 20-3-0, 14KOs.
