Grandmaster Daniel Maravilla Quizon scored 1.5 points in the last two rounds to emerge as the overall champion in the 1st Bino Car Rental Open Individual Rapid Chess Tournament at the Ground Floor, Pavilion Mall, Greenfield District in Mandaluyong City last Saturday, May 31, 2025.
Quizon defeated Johann Cedrick Gaddi in the sixth and penultimate round, then halved the point with Lennon Hart Salgados in the seventh and final round.
He finished with 6.5 points on account of six wins and one draw in the seven-round tournament, which was jointly organized by Einnar Marc Reyes and WFM Cherry Ann Mejia and supervised by FIDE National Arbiter Ranier Pascual.
Quizon opened his campaign in sizzling fashion, defeating Sofia Angelique Alcala in the first round, FM Antonio Molina in the second round, Carl Daluz in the third round, Michael Linde in the fourth round, Don Tyrone Delos Santos in the fifth round, and Gaddi in the sixth round, before splitting the point with Salgados in the final round.
Quizon was awarded the top prize of P7,000.
“I am very happy with my victory because almost all of the top players in Metro Manila and nearby provinces joined the tournament," said Quizon in an interview on Sunday.
"I would like to thank Mayor Jenny Barzaga, Congressman Kiko Barzaga, and coach FM Roel Abelgas for supporting my participation in the 1st Bino Car Rental Open chess tournament,” he added.
It shall be recalled that Quizon displayed his brilliant form to claim victory in the 15th Edition of the Kamatyas Rapid Chess Tournament 2025, dubbed "The Infinite Mindstrokes," at the SM Southmall in Las Piñas City last March 1, 2025.
Quizon reinforced his position as one of the Philippines’ top chess players when he ruled the DG's Cup 2025 Invitational chess tournament held at the Philippine Economic Zone Authority (PEZA) Auditorium, DD Dragon Center Meridian Park Building, 10th floor, Double Dragon, Pasay City last March 14, 2025.
Meanwhile, Salgados, who hails from Cagayan de Oro City, won the runner-up prize of P5,000 with the higher tie-break points in the group of six-pointers that included third placer FM Christian Mark Daluz, fourth placer Don Tyrone Delos Santos, and fifth placer IM Ronald Dableo.
Samson Chhiu Chhin Lim III, Vince Duane Pascual, and NM Jose Aquino Jr. finished the tournament with similar 5.5 points, while Gaddi and Jerome Villanueva had identical 5.0 points, making it to the top 10. -Marlon Bernardino-
