
Young, Llavanes power Camarines past Toledo in PCAP chess tilt

International Master Angelo Abundo Young and National Master Ronald Llavanes powered Camarines Soaring Eagles to a cliff-hanging 11-10 victory over Toledo Xignex Trojans in the Professional Chess Association of the Philippines (PCAP) online chess tournament held virtually at the Chess.com platform Wednesday night, April 23, 2025.
Young, an 8-time Illinois, USA champion, defeated FIDE Master Carlos Edgardo Garma in 47 moves of Queen's Gambit Declined on board four while Llavanes, the head coach of Philippine Airforce chess team, subdued International Master Joel Pimentel in 78 moves of a Sicilian defense, Nadjorf variation on board 6.
Other players who gave the good fight for the Engr. Jojo Buenaventura backed Camarines squad were National Master Jeth Morado, who brought down Diego Abraham Caparino on board seven and John Marco Balane, who split the points with International Master Barlo Nadera on board six.
The Atty. Jeah Gacang backed the Toledo team, meantime spearheaded by FIDE Master Ellan Asuela, who edged Chin Lim on board one, International Master Joel Pimentel, winner over FIDE Master Giovanni Mejia on board two and Woman FIDE Master Cherry Ann Mejia, who dealt Virgenie Ruaya on board three.
The rapid competition forced a 7-all deadlock.
However, Camarines, earlier beat Toledo, 4-3, in the Blitz competition.
"This is our lucky break beating my former team and the defending champion southern division Toledo, it's a team effort and everyone contributes. Thanks to the Camarines team owner Engr. Jojo Buenaventura for giving me the opportunity to showcase my skills", said Young, over all 8th place in the 2019 World Senior Chess Championships in Bucharest, Romania.
Camarines also defeated Zamboanga,17.5-3.5.
