Lausanne, Switzerland – After a scintillating event in Moscow, IBA Champions’ Night returns with another strong card on 7 March, headlined by a 12-round title fight between Albert Batyrgaziev from Russia and Argentinian Neri Ariel Cruz Romero.
Batyrgaziev will defend his WBA Interim Super Featherweight title against “El Maldito” Romero, as the Argentinian looks to extend his 18-match professional winning streak with two knockouts in his past three matches. Batyrgaziev, who is also an undefeated professional boxer with 11 victories to his name, became the WBA title holder in July last year with a win over Ireland’s Jono Carroll, before beating Albert Pagara in the fourth round in October. In December 2023, he was victorious against the Cuban Lazaro Alvarez to become the first IBA Pro title holder.
The co-main event sees Russia’s Georgii Chelokhsaev (24-2-1) meet Pavel Fedorov (8-0) of Serbia over eight rounds in the 63.5kg division. Chelokhsaev will make his IBA Champions’ Night debut – being undefeated in his last five fights which have included four knockouts. Fedorov, in contrast, is one of the most familiar Champions’ Night participants, set to compete in his sixth bout under the IBA Pro banner.
Also on the main card, Russia’s Yury Osipov (4-1) will face a strong challenge in the form of the Olympic champion Roniel Iglesias of Cuba (6-2) in the 71kg division. Osipov’s only Champions’ Night contest to date seen him lose to Farukh Tokhtasunov in Almaty last April, but the boxer will be looking to bounce back in his home country. That same month, Iglesias lost to Marco Verde at the IBA Champions’ Night in Aguascalientes, but later he would return with a victory over Gurgen Madoyan in his home capital of Havana in August.
The undercard will see home favorite Ramazan Karnukaev take on Davlat Boltaev of Tajikistan in the +92kg category. For Karnukaev it is untested waters, as he gets set to make his professional debut against Boltaev, an Asian Games champion and bronze medallist at the Paris 2024 Games. The Tajik has won all five of his professional matches to date, last beating Kazakhstan’s Sagyndyk Togambay in Almaty.
Two undefeated boxers are to face off in the 75kg division in a ranking fight over six rounds, as Russia’s Vadim Tukov looks to continue his 15-match winning streak against Adam Belalia of Sweden, on a run of nine wins from nine. Tukov last went 10 rounds with compatriot Magomed Madiev and won by a unanimous decision, while Belalia – who has won by knockout five times – last vanquished Georgia’s Merab Turkadze in March.
Tanzania’s Yusufu Changarawe (1-0) will be hoping for an upset as he takes on Russia’s Cheerav Ashalaev in the 80kg division. Ashalaev made his IBA Pro debut in Sochi last year, where he defeated Shadiri Musa Bwogi of Uganda by a unanimous decision. Changarawe also made his professional debut at IBA Champions’ Night, winning by split decision against Peter Pita Kabeji from DR Congo over eight rounds in Addis Ababa.
Russia’s Arshak Tovmasyan is to make his professional debut against the undefeated Abduvali Buriboev of Uzbekistan in the 60kg division. Buriboev has nine knockouts from his 11 matches coming out of his home country.
In the opening contest of the evening, in the 71kg division, Ghana’s Aminu Quarshie (6-0-2) looks to remain undefeated against Russian Shokhabbos Shukurov (6-1-0). Shukurov previously defeated Jamshidbek Tojiboev at IBA Champions’ Night in Dushanbe in October 2023.
