Shakur Stevenson of the United States dominated Artem Harutyunyan of Germany via Armenia with a methodical and businesslike beatdown to retain his WBC lightweight belt by wide unanimous decision in front of his hometown fans in Newark, New Jersey Saturday night (Sunday in Manila) but high expectations for the pound for pound fighter left the his fans dissatisfied who were expecting for a spectacular performance. Judges scores: Mark Lyson 119-109, Guido Cavalleri 118-110 and Lynne Carter 116-112 all in favor of Stevenson. PhilBoxing had it 118-110 for Stevenson.
Stevenson measured Harutyunyan in the first couple of round before taking control of the fight the whole night displaying his defensive prowess standing in front of his aggressive opponent connecting with power shots to the head and body of Harutyunyan but his lack of knockout power allowed Harutyunyan to make it to the final bell.
In the 7th-8th rounds, Stevenson was able to hurt Harutyunyan but missed his chance for a dramatic finish as Artem was able to recover and got his second wind to finish the fight on his feet.
Stevenson remains undefeated and improved to 22-0-0 with 10 KOs while Harutyunyan dropped to 12-2-0, 7KOs.
