MIAMI (June 3, 2024) -- Celebrity boxing is the latest rage and international fashion designer/artist Josué Thomas, owner/founder of unisex clothing brand Gallery Dept., is taking it in another direction.
While some celebrities ride the hype and never get too seriously involved in the finer points of the “Sweet Science,” Thomas has been training and sparring six days a week in Miami under the tutelage of Hall of Fame trainer Orlando Cuellar (aka @commanderzero), who has trained world champions such as Glen Johnson, Antonio Tarver, Jean Pascal, Eromosele Albert, and Rances Barthelemy, to name some of the more notables.
Founded in Los Angeles, Gallery Dept. has opened in Paris and Miami, where Thomas resides, and its goal is to create compelling products without sacrificing quality or artistic integrity, believing in the creation of a unique experience and doing things differently.
“Orlando coaches all his boxers and does it the right way,” Thomas remarked. “Our journey has evolved and improved, everything coming together. Unless I’m working in Paris or Los Angeles, I’m with Orlando, training six days a week. We never stop and train like we’re doing it for a fight. I want to be in boxing. It’s rough but I have the luxury to invest in it. Boxers inspire me.”
“There has to be good chemistry between trainer and fighter to have a chance at success, and we have it,” Cuellar said. “I feel that the training we’re doing everyday definitely has a purpose. I know he is anticipating an exciting journey as much as I am; as a matter of fact, it already is.”
Thomas grew up with a love for boxing from the first time he watched boxers in action, but his parents were both artists, and his mother thought it was too brutal for her son, who was exceptionally gifted through his incredibly creative genes, painting, drawing and sketching at the age of three.
The artistic savant was also good at playing basketball, baseball and football, even crossing over from fashion and art into music.
“I always played sports on the side, but I missed the challenge of competing in sports,” Thomas explained. “It’s different in business. I physically wasn’t challenged, so I tapped into boxing and amazingly I learned that I could box forever, because boxing is something you can always get better at. Boxers need a good team – I have one (coach, strength-and-conditioning coach, etc.) – but in the ring you’re alone and, if you have a bad day, you come back and figure it out.
“Boxing is an art but also strategic; it’s beautiful and I love it. I’m glad I found it at this age. Boxing challenges me and I really needed that. It’s a process and to see my vision come to life is what makes it so challenging. I’m seeing the results.”
Is the ultimate goal to be a prizefighter?
“Basically,” Josué answered, “I think that’s interesting and I’m training for it. I’d love to do that and look forward to it. I also enjoy getting better and when my training crosses the line, I’ll talk to Orlando, and we’ll make a decision. Someday, I may become a manager. There are a lot of opportunities in boxing and the more support boxers can get the better. They inspire me to create and it’s cool to see this evolve.”
Josué Thomas isn’t interested in being involved in WWE-like boxing; the 39-year-old is serious about eventually bringing his new passion into the four-cornered ring with Orlando Cuellar in his corner.
