SPORTS FACTS AND FIGURES 56: EUMIR MARCIAL FACES THOEDSAK SINAM ON MARCH 23 IN A HOMECOMING FIGHT

Tokyo Olympics bronze medalist Eumir Marcial will make a homecoming fight on March 23 at the Ninoy Aquino Stadium in Manila, MP Promotions officially announced. He will face Thoedsak Sinam of Thailand who has more fighting experience with a record of 23-13 with 19 knockouts.

Marcial is still training in Las Vegas in preparation for the Paris Olympics in July and he will be heading home on March 11. He will set up camp in Tagaytay City. This will be his first fight in the Philippines since the 2019 SEA Games where he won the gold medal.

So far he has won four gold medals in the biennial meet. Aside from the Manila Games in 2019, he also won gold in 2015 Singapore, 2017 Kuala Lumpur and 2021 Hanoi SEA Games.

This will be Marcial’s first professional bout in the Philippines and is undefeated in four fights with two knockouts since turning pro in 2020. All of his fights were held in the United States.

His latest pro encounter was a stoppage victory against Argentinean journeyman Ricardo Ruben Villalba whom he stopped via second round technical knockout.

Marcial got floored three times by American Isiah Hart in 2022 in Las Vegas, but the Filipino recovered and prevailed when he reciprocated with a fourth round TKO of his opponent. He also scored unanimous decision wins over Americans Steven Pichardo in 2022 and Andrew Whitfield in 2020.

The 28-year-old Sinam is a voyager who has fought in Japan, South Korea, Indonesia, Kazakhstan, and Australia. His latest fights were successive victories last year against compatriots Thirasak Yipaeng by TKO 4 and Virad Panyagonpivad by TKO 3.

The 28-year-old southpaw of Lunzuran, Zamboanga City, keeps thinking about the coming Olympics. “Even though I am fighting in March, my focus and concentration is on the Paris Olympics,” said Marcial as quoted by Philstar Sports.

“The competition there (Paris) is very tough since the Cuban super champion Arlan Lopez is there as well as the Chinese (Tuohetaerbieke Tanglatihan) who beat me in Hangzhou (Asian Games). The Ukrainian who beat me in the semis of the Tokyo Olympics (Oleksandr Khyzhniak) is there so it’s a star-studded cast."

He promised to stop Sinam when they collide before the eyes Filipino fight fans, who will now get the chance to watch the fight live as he intends "to put on a great show."

Sports History: March 4, 2006. Joe Calzaghe defeated Jeff Lacy for the IBF-WBO super middleweight unification. The match was won by an easy unanimous decision over Lacy, who was a pre-fight favorite with the bookmakers. Calzaghe dominated the fight and won every round despite a point being deducted in the 11th for an illegal behind the body punch.
