If MP Promotions head Sean Gibbons’ prediction comes true, Jerwin Ancajas will become the Philippines’ only reigning world boxing champion after his fight against WBA bantamweight titleholder Takuma Inoue at the Kokugikan Arena in Tokyo on Feb. 24.
“Jerwin’s chances to win are tremendous,” said Gibbons. “This is the perfect style for Jerwin who’s a boxer, that’s why he’s called Pretty Boy, and Inoue’s a non-puncher. Jerwin’s really put in the work, returned to his roots at the Survival Camp in Magallanes, Cavite with Vincent Astrolabio and Alex Santisima giving him incredible rounds. Jerwin’s focused. His family’s supporting him with coach Joven (Jimenez) and everyone around him. I’m looking to hear … and the new WBA bantamweight champion Jerwin Ancajas.”
Judges for the scheduled 12-round bout are Luigi Boscarelli of Italy, Kim Byung Moo of South Korea and Alex Levin of Florida. Referee is Minnesota’s Mark Nelson who has worked 27 world championship fights since his Manny Pacquiao-Jeff Horn assignment in Brisbane in 2017.
“Japan has always been a fair country,” said Gibbons. “I hope they keep it that way. I hope the guy from South Korea and the guy from Italy are straight. I know the judge and referee from the US are good. I hope and pray for a fair decision both ways.”
Ancajas will leave for Tokyo with Jimenez on Sunday. How will Ancajas fight Inoue? “Depende sa sitwasyon sa laban,” replied Jimenez. “Tingnan namin sa mga unang rounds.” Ancajas will likely box Inoue at the start then wear him down to go for a knockout in the middle or late rounds. If Inoue decides to engage, Ancajas won’t back off.
Inoue, 28, has scored four KOs in compiling an 18-1 record. Ancajas, 32, totes a 34-3-2 mark, with 23 KOs. The Japanese was knocked down by Filipino Froilan Saludar and Frenchman Nordine Oubaali while Ancajas has never been decked.
