Former ALA star Jonas "El Zorro" Sultan (19-6, 11 KO's) has just come back to action with a unanimous decision win over local Florida warrior Frank Gonzalez (12-4-6, 4 KO's), today Wednesday, September 6, at the Whitesands Events Center, Plant City in Florida, U.S.A.
The far more effective Sultan, born in Tampilisan, Zamboanga del Norte, rocked Gonzalez down to the canvas in chapters 2 and 5, demonstrating to fans his clear boxing superiority.
However, the Pinoy was unable to finish the strong Gonzalez, the two men going on to complete the eight-round distance.
Importantly, at the end, Sultan got his hand risen.
However, the Filipino was deducted 2 points by the referee for hitting his American opponent while he was on the canvas.
Boxing has rules, and not beating an opponent when he/she is on the canvas is one of them.
In fact, it seems that Sultan - who was lucky for not getting disqualified - needs to work with coach Jimenez on controlling himself so that something like this never happens again.
Sultan is handled by the winning team of top coach Joven Jimenez and managers Sean Gibbons and Brandon Gibbons.
"El Zorro" has scored his first win after losing by points to then world champ Paul Butler a year ago in Liverpool, England.
The skilled Jonas Sultan - one of only four men who have claimed wins over popular warrior John Riel Casimero - feels ready for more action in the bantamweight division.
Indeed, now based in the United States, Sultan and his team see tonight's victory as a springboard to more challenging and meaningful wins that will get them closer to another shot at a world title.
The Sultan vs Gonzalez non-title 8-round supporting fight was a production of Florida Promoter Garry Jonas of Plant City's Pro Box Promotions.
Good job, Congratulations Zorro from Philboxing.com!!
