IPIL, Zamboanga Sibugay, Philippines - The Alicia KSB Glass, leaned on the heroic of triggerman Patrick Cabahug, took a hairline victory over Zamboanga Family's Brand Sardines, 86-84, to bag the crown of the 1st Governor Ann K. Hofer Invitational Open basketball tournament at the Capitol Civic Sports Center, here Sunday February 19, 2023.

Down by one point, 84-83, with 26.7 left, Cabahug missed his three-point attempt from the left wing in the dying seconds but his second try at the perimeter area, after receiving a quick pass from Reed Juntilla, proved to be the deciding shot that lift KSB Glass to a breath-taking win.

"I was pressured to take shots because we're running out of time. And I think the second one was a lucky shot," said Cabahug, a native of Cebu and former PBA mainstay, in a post-game interview.
KSB head coach Chelito Caro admitted that it was a broken play. He said that Juntilla and import Emman Ajoula were their first and second options, respectively. But the two couldn't find themselves free.

"Yes, it was a broken play. It's his (Cabahug) decision and he has to take shots," Caro said.

While Cabahug became the instant hero of the night, it was, however, Juntilla who grabbed the limelight after the veteran journeyman became the most valuable player (MVP) in this cash-rich five day tournament wherein the champion will go home with P500,000 in cash and a championship trophy.

Alicia KSB was trailing in most of the way but began chopping the margin in the homestretch with import Landry Sanjo and alternate Emman Ajoula joining Cebuano Hotshot Dondon Hontiveros, John Abad and Jonel Bonganciso in the spree when the KSB Glass needed the most.

A big three by Hontiveros ignited a spirited rally that close the gap, 76-78, with still four minutes remaining.

From thereon, an exchanged of baskets occured with Jayvee Marcelino, Jul-Ashri Ignacio and Cris Dumapig leading the Family's Sardines attack in both ends of the floor.

It was also Cabahug who sunk in three free throws from the stripe with some 20 seconds left that put Alicia KSB on top, 83-82, before Jaycee Marcelino answered it with a fastbreaking play for an 84-83, grabbing back of the lead.

The presence of Mayor Alvie Musa Al-hadji of the municipality of Alicia and team-owner Kin and Sheila Baringue who showed their wholehearted support throughout the competition proved to be the morale booster for the only undefeated team in this tournament which is part of the 22nd Araw Ng Zamboanga Sibugay celebration.

"Humahabol tayo, pero sa awa ng Diyos yung mga fans natin hindi nawawala ng pag-asa sa ating team sa KSB at yun ang nagbibigay nang mga players natin nang lakas ng loob para lumaban. Salamat sa lahat ng sumosuporta sa Alicia KSB," the young mayor said.
