CANELO DEFEATS GGG IN TRILOGY, NO CONTROVERSY THIS TIME

Mexican superstar Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez earned a unanimous decision victory against his arch rival Kazakh star Gennadiy 'Triple G' Golovkin to retain his WBC/WBA/IBF/WBO undisputed super middleweight titles at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas Saturday night (Sunday in Manila) streamed live thru DAZN and promoted by Eddie Hearn's Matchroom Boxing. The scores were Dave Moretti 116-112, David Sutherland and Steve Weisfeld 115-113 all in favor of Canelo. PhilBoxing had it 117-111 for Canelo.

Although the official judges' scores were close, the fight wasn't. Canelo had pushed Golovkin, dictated the tempo, outlanded and connected with some highlight punches at least throughout the first eight rounds when the Kazakh appeared to be slow and tentative and looked everything his age. It was only in the 9th round when Golovkin, probably sensing his reputation at stake, came alive, finally taking risks and let his hands go to backed up his Mexican rival for the first time.

Golovkin continued the pace in the championship rounds that made the fight a bit more interesting although it was a bit too late even if by doing so Golovkin was the recipient of powerful Canelo counters and ran the risk of being stopped by the Mexican. What it showed was Golovkin's excellent conditioning, innate stamina and a great fighting heart.

With the loss, we probably saw Golovkin's last major fight although he said during the after fight interview that he wants to go on fighting. If he does choose to retire, there is no shame to that for the future hall of famer and long time middleweight champion.

Canelo meanwhile said during the after fight interview that he was still looking forward to a rematch with light heavyweight king Dimitrii Bivol if Bivol wins his fight against Gilberto Zurdo Ramirez on Nov. 5 in Abu Dhabi. Canelo however also revealed that he wants to take a rest as he hurt his left hand before the fight.

With the win, Canelo has now improved to 58-2-2, 39KOs while Golovkin dropped to 42-2-1, 37KOs. All blemishes in Golovkin's record were inflicted by Canelo.
