Former lightweight undisputed champion Teofimo Lopez is back in the mix after he stopped veteran Pedro Campa in the 7th round at the Resorts World Las Vegas in Las Vegas, Nevada Saturday night (Sunday in Manila). Lopez was awarded the WBO International 140 lb belt for his effort.
Lopez (17-1-0, 13KOs) was relaxed and confident as he dismantled Campa (34-2-1, 23KOs) with combinations throughout the fight. In the opening minutes of the seventh round, Lopez connected with a right-left combo that sent Campa to the canvas for the first time. Lopez then surgically followed it up with precision punches to the head and body that forced veteran referee Tony Week to stop the contest at 2:14 of the 7th round.
Lopez, who lost all his lightweight belts to George Kambosos, Jnr in a huge upset on Nov. 27, 2021 at the Madison Square Garden in New York, now has a mission to become the undisputed champion again at the super lightweight division and is calling 140 lb undisputed king Josh Taylor for a massive event on Dec. 12 at the Madison Square Garden.
Remains to be seen if that fight can happen. If the Taylor fight fails to materialize, Lopez was open to fight highly popular Ryan Garcia for a mouth-watering encounter between to young charismatic fighters. Lopez himself personally invited Oscar de la Hoya, Ryan Garcia's promoter, to be at ringside for the Campa fight.
Whoever Teofimo fights next, there is no doubt that Takeover 2.0 is set into motion.
